I want to remove the check valve on 1998 Dodge diesel's transmission cooling lines that cool the transmission. Can I remove it and just hook the lines together or can I drill out the innerds of the valve?

Any advice on removal is appreciated. Thanks, Herb

Herb, I just changed the trans out in my 98 12 valve. The check valve is on the right side of the engine it is in the short hose approx 8 in long that is between the cooler and the steel line. This is the rear steel line very close to the bell housing. I pulled my short hose off the check ball is made into one of the hose ends and had a new short hyd line made to replace it. The ends are no8 jic 1 female and one male.

When I removed the check ball I used a piece of square bar stock that fit into the pipe. I rememeber it took a strong blow to remove it. I had the pipe in a vise.

If you park with the truck facing up hill the transmission won't pull until it refills the torque conv. Takes 15 seconds.

I replaced all the lines with hyd hose, and as stated a female No8 JIC (1/2")fitting screws right onto the aux cooler. I didn't realize that the original had a check valve, lol.

If you put the trans in neutral it will fill much quicker. My transmission guy educated me on that one. He claims these Mopar trannys don't circulate much fluid in park, but do in neutral. Place in shifter in "N" tap the trottle, give it 3-4 seconds... drop in drive and go.

If you put in a Transgo shift kit it will pump in park. Or, you can get just the manual valve spool and put in, it comes in the kit, or you can get it from Sonnax.

I start mine, by the time I get my belt on, it's ready to go.

Tell me about the manual valve? I have a B&M floor shifter and I love it. It's great for heavy towing and REALLY nice in the mountains, complete control. With the manual spool would I have to manually shift the truck in day to day driving?

Texis, Are your new lines tywrapped to your frame for support? Did you get your lines from Jegs Automotive? I heard their's are pretty good. I just need to know the thread sizes on all ends and I'd do it. I would like to fix that cheap plastic connector on these lines that's given away on some trucks. The reason i want to remove the check valve is to make my transmission have less things to go wrong with it and I heard this valve can stick. Recently my transmission started making a whine like the pump wasn't getting enough fluid for a short while, then went back to normal. I don't like noises unsolved when it comes to my truck. Thanks to all that's responded so far. Herb

My transmission guy said that the reason the check valve sticks is because people get the trans over hot, then shut the truck off. The CV shuts, then because it's hot and melty (my word, not his ;)) and then cools and sticks shut.
