47RE drain & re-fill

I have a 2000 2wd quad cab with the 47RE. I am going to install

a Mag-Hytec double deep pan this weekend. (which adds 4 qts to

the capacity) How much fluid will I need for the basic drain, re-fill

adjust bands etc? (only 26,000 miles)

18-20 qts. for the transmission and TC. At least thats what it has taken the last 3 times I did it.

Just doing the basic drain and refill, i'm thinking more like 8-9 qts.

When i did mine it took 5 quarts to fill it with the stock pan.

Same for me. I've heard of some people loosening the bolts on the valvebody to get more out. Never done it though.

I did the same and had 5 gal ATF +4 . Think I used about 12 qts, but the truck had set for about 4 days and whatever that was going to drain into the pan had drained. I put on a DD 727 as well.



I assume you are also changing the filter?

Beware if you loosen the valve body bolts to drain more fluid out that you will need a torque wrench to retighten them or it could cost you more than just the price of an oil drain.

2 gallons on my Mag Hytec. NOT a double deep. Get three gallons, add nine quarts and check it hot in neutral. I will bet 10 quarts. Of course you will install a new filter too, right?

4-5 qts is about right 4 more with the Mag-Hytec. No need to open the TC to get it all out unless you are changing to a synthetic or the fluid is damaged, i. e. smells burnt or discolored.

Man what a difference in numbers, if I was a newbee I'd be as confused as a nun in a ***** house!



I think the general numbers are;

46 transmissions --4 quarts

47 transmissions --6 quarts



the 46 with mag-hytec add 2 quarts to above

the 47's hold the same as a mag-hytec regular pan

if you install the double deep add 4 quarts to totals

I just did it last week. Left it drain for probably an hour while I fiddled with some other things. Put the new filter in and topped it off with 6 1/2 quarts with a stock pan.



at 7. 20 a quart I hope to not have to do it for a while

47RE refill with Mag-Hytec double deep

Oo. And the winner is... ... 10 qts.

approx 6. 5 qts came out (did not loosen valve body)

replaced the closed type filter with an open, and added the extension.



Very nice product. I bought mine from Fred Swanson at

Desert Diesel Parts.



Also installed Westach temp gauge using the 1/8 NPT port in the

new pan.

I don't think these things always drain the same amount depending on how long you let it drain and what position it stopped. I drain into a five gallon bucket. Then I measure how much is in the bucket. I put that much back in so the warm fluid level test is right on the mark every time.

Trans temp gauge?

Just curious... .

One of the first mods I plan to make is the double deep M-H trans pan. However, I don't plan to add the gauge until later. Is it as simple as removing a plug and adding the temp sensor later?

I'll be getting a couple gauges, and plan to add them all at once. But I'll probably add the pan first. I've never seen one up close, but they seem to be the way to go.

You might want to get the gauge or at least the sender as you will take an a small ATF bath trying to swap the plug for the sensor when that sucker if full. Otherwise, it is that simple. .

On an 03 you could have either the 47RE or the 48RE depends on build date and standard or HO model.



I put my sensor in the pan after I took it out of the line and had no problem, just pull the plug and put your finger over the hole immediatly, then grab the sensor and at the same moment you remove your finger slip the sensor in place, only spilled a few ounces.

am getting the mag pan and temp gauge too. i plan on installing both at the same time during a regular trans fluid change. makes more sense. that way, you only get dirty once! also, from what i am reading, although the mag pan has a port for the sensor, that does not seem to be the preferred location. depending on how accurate you want to get, you might consider mounting in the trans line itself. as far as capacity goes. i have come to respect whatever joe says, and i think he's right on this time too... . just measure and replace what comes out! the "kiss" method always seems to work well!javascript:smilie('')
