My brother has a 2000 model 2500 4x4 24 valve with the 47RE auto. He brought it to me and said it was shaking, vibrating a lot and leaking transmission fluid. I looked underneath and I was able move the whole transfer case around, at first I thought the transfer case bolts had came loose, then I saw that the whole overdrive housing had cracked at the rear. From what I have read this isn't an uncommon problem, and I also found a bad U-joint on the rear driveshaft which I think may have caused this. The question is can I just support the transmission and take the transfer case and crosmember off then unbolt the old O/D housing and bolt a new one on, or is it more involved then that?

Yes your on the right track except, remove the entire od. unit then replace hsg. , snap ring under plate held in with 2 screws, but you will have to remove the od. brake clutch assy. from frt. of od. unit.. Check to make sure u jts. are timed to each other..
Get a service manual.. Good luck.
