I bought this truck a couple weeks ago. I got a hell of a deal because it was a lease return (Only had 14000 miles on it). Unfortunately it's an SO with the 47RE trans. I don't mind the SO but I'm wondering what I need to keep in mind when I start to bomb the truck. How much hp/tq can this trans handle? Anything you think I should know would be very helpful.

Also, as you can see, I'm new here but I've been looking around for a while. I love this board and can't wait to learn from all of you. This is also my first diesel and I will never go back to gas. I LOVE THIS TRUCK!

I'll start it for you.

First is gauges, then get the transmission stronger with torque converter and front upgrade and valve body.

Now it is strong and ready for a good life.

Next let it breath with 4" exhaust and a better air filter--AFE of BHAF. Follow with a box and injectors.

Let us know how much hp/torque you want.

It is addictive and expensive.

What type of converter and valve body upgrades would you guys recommend. (As you can see. , I'm new here too)

I also have an SO with the 47re. The trucks main duties will be to tow maybe up to about 8500 lbs. May be a little more but it would be very rare. Its also going to be my commute vehicle for a little while. As far as engine mods, the only thing I'm really interested in is exhaust and air filter, BUT I want to keep the transmission healthy. Any and all input would be appreciatged.

I pull almost 11,000 lbs at least once a month with my SO/47RE. If it's anything like the 47RH in my '95 and my 47RE was in my '01. 5, I don't have anything to worry about. If it breaks I'll let you all know about it but don't hold your breath... you'll turn Ford blue!:D

Thanks

Thanks for all the replies.....

Fox

I'm only looking to get it around 300hp but want to make sure I don't break the transmission. The way everyone talks I was under the impression the 47RE was weak and fragile. I guess it just seems that way when compared to the 48RE. I don't think Dodge would put that bad of a transmission with the CTD.

PS. .

I should be getting my gauges this week. Just waiting for the Pyro to come in that matches the '03 cluster.

Brandon, there will be someone who disagrees but if all you want is 300hp then a EZ box and 275 injectors should get you there.

You may want/need to get rid of the muffler also and a better air filter.

The trans will NEED more line pressure and then you will WANT a tighter converter.

The trans is not fragile, it has decent parts in it from the factory for the power you are looking at, it just doesn't have enough pressure.

Study up on it. You will be happy if you do.

Just turning the pressure up will risk setting a code and putting it into limp-home mode.

Feel free to PM me.

Thanks Fox,

I really appreciate your input. I guess I should have looked at my last reply closer but I was in a hurry. I meant to say 400 hp.

I'll send you a pm.

Hey guys, I had a new 03 CA SO/47RE here for the past few days receiving a makeover.

It is now a 370+ HP, DTT equipped, CA version HO eater. Along with the full DTT upgrade, a 5 inch DD exhaust, DD DPM, DD2's and full Phantom gauges on the pillar, plus an underdash mounted Westach Fuel pressure gauge. .

All I can say is I like the way this truck drives. It is very responsive, and very little smoke. He's running 4. 10's with 35 inch tires, and it'll smoke them off with no effort at all.

Wow :--)

Fred are you saying that the only power upgrades were 5 inch exhaust, a 65 hp torque module, and injectors? And that produced 370 hp with a 235 hp starting point?

These engines are incredible! Were those dyno numbers? Were the EGT's controllable, or is a new turbo in that guy's near future?

I'm not starting a transmission war here so I'll just say there are numerous aftermarket builders who make beefier trannies and torque converters. Search for them. I like my Goerend Brothers a lot, but would highly recommend you investigate and talk to them all.

PCline, that was more of a comparison between my HO running DD2's and the DD DPM(EZ) and his CA 235HP running the same DD2's(from my truck),DD DPM(EZ), plus the 5 inch and the DD airbox.

It would pull very hard through the gears and I had to work to catch up to him, and I'm running DD3's now.

EGT's can get up there, and yes a turbo will probably be in his future. Once I get mine from DD and can see firsthand how it works on mine.

I've driven Lawrence's with the turbo and DD2's, and it ran much harder on the top end then mine or any other 03 I've driven.
