Can a 47RH transmission be put into a truck that came with a 47RE? How about in a 24 valve?

Since my 95 was wrecked last Monday and it's future is in question at this time, I'm wondering if the 47RH Goerend Bros transmission in it could be put into a newer truck.

Thanks,

Blake

Good question. The transmissions are the same when it comes to mounting, the difference is that the 47-RE is electronically controlled and the 47-RH isn't. I'm thinking you could use a PCM from a manual transmission truck and use the 47-RH just fine, with a couple of other mods (kickdown cable?).

Wish I had a difinittive answer, but I'm a manual kinda guy. :D

I'm kinda interested in this as well for my 97. Spoke to Bill K. and he didn't recommend it,but said it could be done.

I'm trying to lose the factory PCM,as the only thing it still controls in my truck now is the trans.

Nowell - is there any computer involved with the 47RH ? How much wiring is involved to electrically hook up the OD and lockup circuits, and are they full manual control ?

Pretty Simple

The transmission has a plug on the drivers side with three wires going to it. The center is hot with the key on if I remember correctly, and the other two are OD and TCC lock ground wires. My switches send a ground to complete the circuit. Pretty simple really.

No "puter

There is no computer involved with the transmission. I have a manual valve body and manual switches for full control.

Well my truck must have been listening to this thread, because I think the transmission just puked.

Thanks Nowell, that's exactly what I wanted to hear.

Any idea why Bill would not recommend doing this swap,to get rid of the electronics ?

PS Check out my post in the 911 forum if you can lend any advice on my trans problem.

Chris,

You don't need a manually controlled valve body since the only electronics involved with the 47RH are the OD and lockup. A stock valve body would work or any modified 47RH valve body. You would need to control the OD and lockup with switches, but the rest would work fine.

Could you just take the computer out of a 95 and put it in a 97 or 98 12 valve instead of the one that was in there? The computer doesn't control much on the engine anyway. I bet it might be tough to get it to work on a 24 valve.

You would have to keep the 24V computer to run the engine, unless you got an actual Cummins stand alone ECM. Not sure if you have to change harnesses. The 24V computer would probably work with the older trans, but it would probably set codes.

Manual Valve Body?

I have a manual valve body not because I need one, I have one because I prefer it for racing.

I have a full ATS 47RH in my '96 which came with the 47RE. To control OD and lockup I am using 2 ATS controllers. Either one can be set to come on and disengage at almost any speed you want by just turning a knob. It is working quite nicely. Only thing is the factory OD light and trans temp light (both not connected) stays on all the time, but the ATS controller has its own indicator light and I have a transmission temp gauge.

24V ECM

The ECM that Dodge puts in our trucks will work with out a PCM hooked to it. If you are going to removed the PCM and manually control your trans you will need to have the 24 V ECM re flashed to think that it is in a manual trans truck. I run my 24V with just the stock ECM and have no drivability problems.

I know of a fellow that swapped a 24V into another Chev truck. The 24V originally had the Auto trans behind it. The engine would not rev beyond 2000 rpm until he had Cummins re-flash it to a "Manual trans" application. I think that they tried several files ti they found the one that worked.

KOA,

I am curious as to why you did not just install a 47re?

Thanks,

Long story but I got sent a 47RH by mistake. I needed my truck and it would take too long for me to send it back and have a 47RE sent. To make it work I had to get 2 controllers. Now that I have it, I like being able to completely control when OD and lockup will engage manually instead of having a computer decide. I am very happy with my setup.
