I'm thinking of installing a 48re in a 97 2500 4x4, question is, will the tail shaft from my 47 fit the 48? the 48 I'm looking at is from a 2 wheel drive.
Kwoodson; This may or may not help. When I had a gear Vendor installed on my 2 wheel 98 12v I had to get the shaft shortened. The first shop did not understand how to balance a drive shaft. I knew they would not understand if I took it back and took it to an old established place. They would not use the shaft I brought them and used a new heavier tube an cut it to length and welded in the yokes and sent it out to be balanced like they do their Motor Home jobs. It turned out good like it should have. Too light of a material and a shaft will whip like a Kids jump rope. When I got home I jacked up one rear wheel and left it in neutral so I could turn it by hand and set up my dial indicator at various places along the length of the shaft. It was wasted effort because I should have known by their reputation I would not have to worry about it. I was about to take a 2100 mile trip and did not want any surprises. This took place at least 7 or 8 years ago and I have had no trouble. Know from their reputation who you are dealing with and it may not be the least expensive but in the long run it will be best. REGARDS Jim

Yes, it should. A 48RE is nothing but an internally beefed up 47RE. You will need to swap sensor harnesses because they are different and the neutral safety swith will need a fix to use the old type.
