After much debate, iv'e decided to pull the trigger on swapping my auto for a manual. i'm afraid even with all the upgrades i'm still not going to be completely happy with the auto. that being said. i'm torn between who to go with for the kit. iv'e talked to three companies. high impact gear, midwest transmission, and superstick transmission. so far high impact gear comes in at the cheapest. but i cant really find much information on them. midwest was a good bit higher but i was able to find a couple good reviews. superstick responded to a few messages but never gave me a price and i haven't heard back from them since. judging by their transmission only pricing id say they'd be right between the other two.

That all being said, does anyone on here have experience with any of the three? i could probably just buy the trans and source all the other parts myself but if i can get it all from one place that'd be ideal. once i get the parts in i will probably make another thread with a few other swap questions, most the info i can find is on 4wd trucks, and mines an early 98 2wd so i'm sure i'm going to hit some snags.

I did the swap on my ‘95 RWD. I found a transmission and pedals at a salvage yard. Bought a new SBC clutch kit with flywheel and their hydraulics. Other than yanking the auto, installing the pedals, new transmission, and hydraulics, it was just some minor wiring and shortening the drive shaft about 1/2” if I remember correctly. It’s been a long time.

Now, that said, I don’t know what you’re going to pay for one of those kits and installation, but a good TC, a valve body, and a stock rebuild will make you happy with the auto. I much prefer my auto.

You don't say how much power you have built the engine to or how you use the truck. The NV4500 is the weakest manual transmission Dodge put behind a Cummins and the 3rd to 4th gear ratios suck for towing. In addition, repair parts are of dubious quality. I can't imagine how much a "kit" costs but if you are willing to lay out the money a few extra hundred to convert to a G56 will pay out in the long run if you intend to keep the truck for a long period of time. Take it from some one who went through 12 NV4500s with only moderate engine enhancements.

Truck is bone stock but I’ll be adding a plate and gov springs. I can’t imagine the nv4500 being the weakest of dodge manuals. The getrag 360 was much weaker. And to buy a new/reman G56 adds roughly $2-2500 to the total. I’d love a 6 speed but I can’t justify the extra cost.

I forgot about the Getrag but IMO the NV4500 isn't much of an improvement. All I have added is a plate. I had a 3GSK for awhile but the stock gov springs perform better. One NV4500 failure average cost for me was $1500. A $2-2500 initial investment sounds like peanuts to me.

The nv4500 is a good transmission if you are over 18,000 pounds do not use fifth gear and you won’t have issues with it . Quad 4x4 has high quality parts to rebuild with . I wouldn’t own another automatic the longest day I lived in a dodge cummins .
