48-RE, Tow-Haul Mode, Exhaust Brake Ques.?

I have a friend who will be fulltime RVing, in the near future. He has a Ford gasser, now and is considering upgrading to a diesel pickup. He has driven a couple of Duramaxes, and likes them other than their price. I mentioned that there are alternatives (Dodge/Cummins).

There are a couple of questions he has. Does the 48RE have a Tow-Haul mode and how does it function? Also, does it have a retarding/braking effect like the Allison? Is the 48RE exhaust brake compatible, yet? I've checked some of the threads and it looks like it may be close to approval. Any new info?

My friend and I appreciate your help in this matter. I will show him the results of your replys.

I can tell you that my 04' when in tow/haul mode does lock out the overdrive and the shift pattern is different, for some reason DC in their infinite wisdom does not lock out overdrive in my 05', I am still trying to figure this out. I definetly like towing with my 04' because of it, I tow a skid loader and it seems to have better control on the braking side in tow/haul mode. I only test drove the Allison in a Chev and I wasn't crazy about the way it downshifted! JMHO

Tow haul is different in 05. It does not lock the converter in decel. It mostly alters the shift schedule. The owners manual kind of states it, but is just fuzzy enough to make you not sure if it is working correctly. Bottom line is it is different from earlier 3G's.

I am just courious as to what you are calling the "tow / haul" mode? I have a 48 RE in a 03. 5 HO and I only know about the switch on the shifter wand that will lock out over drive. Is this an update to the 48RE?

Yes. The newer 48re's have different programming and the button on the shifter is labeled tow/haul. My '04 says tow/haul but it's only an OD lockout like your '03. The '05 and maybe '04. 5 truck get the newer shift point programming.

Thanks for the come back. I do think my 48RE needs to have it's shift points adusted especially when it is cold in the AM.
