Cummins sled puller w/gas RPM's?

VW bug fuel line insulation

Nick,

Always a good time watching one hooked up. No clue if I'm stating this correctly and I know the game is distance based per class. But any clue what the drawbar pull would be at stall or near stall? I be there are a bunch of variables too.

Nick, always good to see your hardware at work! Got a sweet spot for classic, special V8's like the FE working hard and kickin *****. The very vocal person in the stands must be your cheering section. I hear in every vid you posted.

That sound never gets old! Back in the day, I was a die-hard Ford guy and we had quite a stable of FE and FT engines at the lumber yard. Heck, even our forklifts ran Ford backhoe running gear with the 3 cylinder 201ci Dagenham diesels.

No, I don't have any idea of drawbar pull or what to compare it with. I know in the old days farm tractors were rated at the drawbar in hp or plows it could pull. However, too many variables there too. Plows could come in 12", 14", 16" or 18" and the difference in the ground played a big part.

The track and sled play a big part in pulling. Hitch height is 26" maximum with drawbar length also limited but adjustable. Front weights are limited to 60" in front of the front axle center line. The lighter you can get your truck the more weight can go up front, the better. Tire size/final drive gear ratios v/s ground speed v/s power is key. My ground speed on this pull was 16 mph, not sure what my tire speed was, allowing for the slippage. On this pull with my class the weight box hit the front stop at about 300' then the shanks/grousers hit the ground and you come to a screeching stop. Go as fast as you can as quick as you can and get the most speed/momentum as possible.

It's a fun 20 second ride after an 800 mile tow to get there:-laf

It's obvious that you spend time setting up your truck. It ran straight and clean the whole way, never skipped a beat. And you did it with a motor that is not known for being easy to make reliable power with. It never ceases to amaze me when some folks spend a ton of money on paint and lettering and then skip and puke their way to half track.

Thanks JH, I was a while dialing in the suspension and chassis but it's track manners are pretty smooth now. All the power in the world don't help if you can't get it to the ground. I ended up 3rd out of 19 trucks on this day. A 1971 Ford with a 557 took 1st and a 1979 Ford with a 478 took second. Several 454's and 460's fell by the wayside with the ole FE:D

New video of the first pull of the new season (6500 lbs class). The track was too hard and dry for my tires, I was just spinning, note the slow ground speed. My weight transferred well tho (1200 lbs), note the front fenderwell gap before I launch and after. I have a set of 35" BFG/AT's that I can put back on now that I have enough power to turn them (I think):-laf

I gotta get my camera person to pipe down, I wanna hear my truck:D

Thanks Sheldon, that makes me feel good when someone enjoys pulling. I will post more videos as the season goes. I get as much enjoyment towing to the pulls with my Cummins as I do the actual sled pull.

I was in 2nd gear (c6 auto) with this pull. It was a small sled and the track was muddy. Still hit some serious rpm. It is also a lighter class 5500 lbs.

I must have listened to that a dozen times now, and I am still grinnin' like a 'possum. Love that big block Ford sound.

My Vernal Utah 2015 pull. The bigger tires helped my traction but dropped my rpm down, the ground speed is there tho. I was sure my motor was gonna run backwards when the weight box hit the top and the shanks deployed! Lol

Thanks Mike, it is a fun 20 second ride! It only takes a day and a half the get there, but that is fun too!

My first truck I ever bought was a 69 F205. It had a 360 in it, but a nicely built 429 was found in the local paper (Bozeman MT in 1990). Put it all together and after tinkering forever to get that thing to run right (needed over 30 degrees of timing with the radical cam) that thing would pass anything but a gas station.

That engine was abused so much by me. 8K rpms all the time. Only time it left me stranded was when I REALLY over revved it missing a gear and the oil pump shaft broke. Thankfully that same shaft spins the dist so it coasted to a stop.
