Well after 4 months of reading all your fun topics I decided it was time to make the leap! I'm ordering my 03 Silver/Sport SLT 3500 HO/48RE 4x4 Quad tommorrow. Can't wait. Since I will use the truck for my Landscape business, hence it will plow snow in the winter and pull my equipment all summer long I've decide to go with the 4. 10 gear sets. My question is about the final drive ratios of the 48RE vs the 6Spd. I thought I read somewhere that they were different. Please correct me if wrong. Must say I have truly enjoyed reading all the great comments on the site! Nice to know there are others that think like I do when it comes to Diesel trucks! By the way this will be my first new vehicle ever, always have been buying wrecks and rebuilding them, thought it was time to indulge and just enjoy driving something I didn't have to rebuild. Thanks for your input!

oops, my first post and I placed it in the wrong spot, thought I'd place it over here where it's suppose to be.

The 6 spd final ratio is 0. 73:1

The 48RE final ratio is 0. 69:1

Enjoy the NEW truck, you made the right choice.

If it were me, and of course it's just my opiion, I'd go with the 3. 73 gears. Landscape equipment doesn't seem like it would be heavy enough to need the lower gearing. You'd get better mileage unloaded, and you won't have a problem pulling stuff when you do.

Like I said, it's just my opinion. Your truck- your call.

Congrats either way

Thanks for the replies!!/Why I choose the 4.10's

Thanks for the replies!!

Your probably right about the wieght of my equipment not stressing out the truck, my heaviest tractor wieghs in at only 6000 lbs and even with the trailer that only adds another 1650lbs. I thought about the gear ratio's for along time and finally decided on the 4. 10's for a couple of reasons. 1st was the plowing scenario, I felt the lower gearing would be easier on the drive train and the 48RE, 2nd was the fact that as I'm growing my business and looking at mini-excavators or the such in the future I didn't want to loose tow capacity for the future (read as- my wife says this truck has to last until I die or 100 years which ever comes first before I can even think of another) so i had to think of a few years down the road. 3rd I thought about the option of going with 285 or 305's tires when it's time for replacement. But I can tell you one thing foe sure I'm sure anxious to get it. I ordered it today 4-9-03- see post on the other forum.
