while under SOME load, my 48re transmission occasionally growls when it drops into top gear and the torque converter is locking up. It sounds kinda like the clutch in the TC, but not sure. I only have 3200 miles on it and haven’t pulled much more than a small boat at this time. Any one else have this problem and any ideas?

It's been said that it's the turbo grunting as high boost is suddenly lost as the TC locks up and rpm drops and the charge air huffs back through the turbo charger. I took my silencer ring out of the turbo's intake and haven't heard the grunt since. Maybe coincidence or something to it but the noise is gone. Also, if you roll on the throttle while it's in third, it'll delay the shift to O/D and lockup. I'd like O/D to come on alittle later like my '01. 5 did under light throttle.

Thank you very much. I checked your rigs out also and Ol Red looks great. I like its look.

I've been wondering what that noise was for the last week. I removed my silencer ring today and it got rid of it immediately. Thanks for the info.

I installed the AFE filter about a week or so ago. The silencer ring has been removed. If I'm on the throttle kinda hard, like pulling a steep hill at slow speeds (30mph), then let off the throttle abruptly, I get a nasty growling sound for a second or two. It's quite loud. Is this the turbo growl you guys are talking about?
