48RE how much can it take?

I'm picking up a new 2500 this friday and am starting to plan a few upgrades.

how much power can a stock 48re handle before it starts to self destruct?

Not much!!!!!!!!!! That needs to be one of your first upgrades. I'm going to give you the benefit of my screwups. I had to have mine completely rebuilt. I kind of charged in and did a lot of what I should have in the way of upgrading my air intake, ... my exhaust,... . the lift pump to a FASS,... gauges,... but then I stopped short because I got anxious and started putting various boxes on my rig. To quote the transmission guru, Tim Holt,... it only takes one run to screw her up. Well honestly I probably had about a dozen with slipping occurring in the 3rd to OD which I mistakenly took as defueling. It was as Tim told me my OD clutches were toast. As they say in life,... you can't fix what is behind you. So this is what I did to rectify my mistakes. I did a Stage V and also added a Kevlar 2nd gear band. The boxes I have used, when used with the new transmission made a huge difference. I really understand what many of the members have said previously about "getting the power to the ground". This is just sotp, but I'd say the power difference with all things being equal of running a box with a stock transmission and with an upgraded one feels like 50% increase in power. Hope that answered your question and now you'll have only yourself to blame if you toast your transmission. :-laf

Thanks, that's what I thought. I think I'll keep the 05 stock for some time and up the bombing of the 99. besides, with some of the injector problems I've read about I don't want to toast my warranty as well as the transmission.



I thought about getting the 6 speed on the 05 but decided that 5 years of shifting was engough.

Injectors are another nightmare issue. I had 7 injectors installed over a two month period. I did without the truck for their testing for at least two weeks of that period. I would recommend to you that asap you change to a 3 micron filter. Stocker doesn't do it. If you ever do get into injector problems then make changing your fueling site a priority. If you ever do plan to bomb then go with a FASS or Air Dog and go wiuth their 3 micron. You'll save a lot of headaches.

Thanks for the tip about the 3micron filter. I had an airdog on order for my 99 but I canceled it. I called them to ask about using on the new 05 and they said I had to drop the fuel take and make some changes. I'm not sure it the stock transfer pump is taken out or not. I decided to leave the truck as is for a while and see how it shakes out.



does anyone know what the problem with the injectors is? Is it a bad production run or just a poor design/quality control.

I am no expert but I think alot of the injector problems are from poor filtration. The duramax guys swear by 2-3 micron filtration. Fass or airdog with 3 micron may help. Stock is only 10 micron. I wish someone had a 3 micron filter for the stock housing... ... I bet they would sell a ton of them!
