So, changed my fluid on 3/3 and to my surprise, I found a 2" piece of retaining clip in my pan. Took it to a shop and was told by a "re-builder" that it's probably from the overdrive unit clutch pack. This clip should be roughly 5" in diameter based on the radii of the piece I found. One edge looks to be factory cut at an angle and the other has less angle and is rough to touch to indicate the broken edge. $520. + any parts and fluid. I'm a Amsoil dealer so I don't need to pay the shop for fluid. Parts ?? Seal, new clip ? Wondering what would total more than the basic missing/broken/needed parts. Told 5. 5mHrs @94. 00. Seems fair. . Problem is, I don't trust anyone based on my years of experience getting work don't by others. Nuff said.

I'd tackle it myself with information available to do it, assuming (I hate that word) all I need to do is to replace the broken clip, I'm guessing a day for me as I don't have a mechanics shop. Drop drive line, pull transfer case and the OD unit. Tear apart and fix. . Sounds simple enough. .

I will admit that after the mods, this truck has lots of power and I have spun up the trans/TC more than once briefly while trying to pass. Other than that, I take very good care of it maintenance and driving wise. I think something should be done to the trans or TC to solve the slippage issue in conjunction with the broken retainer clip. .

Any info out there for tearing into the procedure appreciated. The image of the ring is at the PACT site below. It looks to be the approximate size and one I think my piece is from.

Anyone out there had the same issues with their 48RE ?

05, Laramie, 4x4QC, SRW, 175K miles, Flash Pack, AFE high flow, Banks high flow, GDP fuel, free flow muffler. LOTS of power. .

The only piece I found was the 2" long one. Did you do the work or others ? Any info to be found that you know for this procedure ? The image of the ring is at the PACT site below. It looks to be the approximate size and one. Any further help much appreciated.

Yes I did, it took about a half a day, removal was the time killer, once the OD was off it took about 20 minutes to remove and install the new ring. That ring your showing looks like the one I replaced

I believe its the OD Ring, I don't see How the wave ring could get busted and not have some serious results.

That is what broke on my unit, it was a inch and a half and when I serviced the trans it was stuck to the magnet. Hard to believe that the metal piece worked its way into the main unit without damaging the OD unit. This is fairly easy to replace. The hard part is compressing the unit enough to get the old ring out and installing the new one.
