I was scouting my snowmobile haunts yesterday after our new snowfall. Truck was empty, except for me. I drove over the pass, the road was sloppy and snow packed in places. I got to the forest service road which had a good 12-18 inches but a couple tire tracks to follow. I used 4x4H for a while and switched down to 4x4L until my turnaround spot. I drove out downhill in low and when I got back to the main dirt road I went to 4x4 H again. I was running downhill about 30 mph on this snowpacked road, mostly coasting when the trans temp light comes on. I pull off, set the brake and let it idle in neutral. I check the transmission dipstick and the fluid looks and smells like new. The stick isn't even hardly warm and the level is good. No leaks, no snow blocking the radiator or any coolers. I reach underneath and the transmission pan is even fairly cool, I could hold my hand on it, just barely warm.

So I am pretty confident that it is not actually overheated. Other than the protection mode locking out the OD the trans shifts fine. I head home on the highway, back over the pass. The light comes on and off a few times then stays off for good after about 15 miles on the road.

I am pulling the sleds up the hill today for some riding. Its only 1500-2000 lbs of trailer but the speeds are low enough to keep the convertor unlocked much of the way up. I will let you know if I have any other problems.

Anybody else have a problem like this ever? Seems to me like some moisture may have found its way into a connector of something. Where does the transmission temp reading come from?

Looks like I have another gauge to install

A temp gauge Is better, you know where you are at

I hate a oil light but If you have the gauge which tells you the temp also then you got It. I would like to have both and you know for sure. The light Would be nice with the gauge.

Temperature readings come from the governor pressure sensor, in the valve body. That warning light doesn't come on until the fluid temp reaches 260°F (or, more correctly, until the sensor THINKS the fluid is that hot). It's the purple wire on the round connector on the driver's side of the trans, which connects to pin #8, in the center.

Thanks Tom! I know it wasn't anywhere near 260*, the pan and the dipstick would have been "burn your hands HOT" if that was the case. I will crawl under it today and make sure that connector is installed correctly.

Even though I knew it wasn't a true overheat, the limp home is irritating. The computer locks the fan clutch so it roars all the time, and the truck wont shift into OD making anything over 50mph loud.

I drove the truck with the small trailer up and back yesterday. No problems, no light, but I didn't run it in the same kind of snow slop either.
