Is there a difference(mechanical) in the 48re installed in the 2003 than in 2004 and up?

The 05+ trucks have a TV motor that is controlled by the ECU whereas the earlier trucks have a TV cable.

The later trucks also had a 23 single side OD direct clutch pack.

As1de from 1 or 2 updated thrust washers, those are about the only physical differences.

Ok my bad, I have a friend that has an 03 with a 47re. I was under the impression that they went to the 48re in 04. So they have always used the

48re in 3rd gens?

Early 03 SO's and Cali trucks used the 47RE until the stock was gone, around mid MY03 then it was strictly 48RE. HO were either manual or 48RE.

Thanks for all the talk, but my issue is I ordered a valve body kit (48RE) and afterwards noticed that the year was for 04 and up. I assume that the kit will work on the 03 48RE.

Maybe, maybe not. There are 2 VB's installed in the 48RE thru its life time and they setup differently. If you have a Transgo kit, the instructions will show you how to tell if it is an early or late VB. Reccomended to use the correct kit for the correct VB or the results may be unknown.
