My 2004. 5 is a 3500 SRW 4 Door 8' bed 373 rear . The trans. does the 3-4 shift above 2000 rpm different than below 2000 RPM. Below 2000 the shift is crisp & clean the tack drops smoothly from the high RPM to the lower RPM. Above 2000 Rpm the shift seams to take longer. The tack does a two step drop. The engine RPM drops part way to the lower RPM an instant later it drops the rest of the way into the clutch lock up mode. All other shifts are nice, firm and at the right time. The truck has 8k miles and is being run empty. Is this normal?

Sounds normal to me. When it shifts below 2000 rpm there is obviously not much load on the engine and the trans can get away with a shift that doesn't unlock the convertor. On the higher rpm shift if the trans didn't unlock for that couple of seconds you would really feel the shift. Most of us would actually prefer the firmer shift but since they sell to the unwashed masses as well I am sure DC programmed it this way to make things smoooooth(er).

If you run it in T/H mode you should get the more agressive shifts and it will wait until the higher rpm to do so.
