I keep hearing about this rear thrust washer in the 48RE that is going to fail from lack of lubrication caused by holes drilled in the rear planetary gear. Dodge has been installing these transmissions in trucks for two years now. I'm sure if this was a problem it would have been fixed at some time. My question is if this was a problem at one time when was it corrected? If my trans needs a part changed I don't want to waite til it breaks.

The only way the thrust washer fails is if you install an EB (exhaust Brake). It is not even proven that it will fail but it is suspect to failure in testing. Please make sure you read the entire thread. If you had the subject would have been clear to you.

Well I feel a little better now knowing that there must not have been much of a problem with the thrust washer. I wasn't planning on installing a exhaust brake.

As I understand the situation, the thrust washer WCounts is asking about is the REAR one while the one in the Exhaust Brake thread is the FRONT one.

The REAR one was brought up a year ago in an article by one of the aftermarket rebuilders as a POSSIBLE problem.

At that time I posed, in the Exhaust Brake thread, the question of this being the source of that issue and was told that the one in the article wasn't involved in the EB issue.

So far there haven't been any reports here of any actual failures of either one.
