Ok, I got my transmission temp gauge installed last night. I installed the probe on the right side on the transmission, near the back of the transmission. So my question is what is a safe temp to operate at with the probe back there I know if you have the sending unit in the cooler line you can run higher temps, but I want to know what temp I need to back out of it from where my sending unit is placed.

I will install the cooler line tap later with the transmission upgrade, this gauge install has already cost me a bunch of $, since I had to install a Fuel pressure that I don't even need  Had to fill the other hole in the pod, oh well

Thanks

FWIW - I run a little over 150* empty. 165*-180* pulling a 9,500 lb. 5th wheel in the summer on a hot day.

Backing into a tough camping spot that took a couple of minutes, I saw the temp hit 200*.

BTW - I have since moved the probe to the Mag-Hytec pan location and still see the same temps.

I put my temp probe in the pan, and very seldom see over 125 when empty... towing on level ground (10K 5th wheel) it hangs around 140, and hit 180 pretty quick on a hot day going up a long incline... . hope that helps.

have had my gauge in the transmission for a while and never saw temps above 180* till today. its hot but i dont think its that hot if you remove the thermostat in the transmission line will it run cooler? does the diesel have this thermostat or just the gas engine?

I was running around last night empty with the juice on 5 and hit 160-180 with it, so that sounds "normal" i guess. What is the "too hot" like if it hits 200* then back out of it and let it cool down?

Towing 12,000 lbs it stays below 200 deg until I hit the steep incline by home. Shortly after that it hits 200 and sometimes hits 220 deg. Unloaded I ignore it as temps are always below 180 regardless of speed. BTW ... using reverse will raise your temps in a hurry. An interesting note --- idling your rig to cool down the trans will only work if you are in gear or neutral. In Park, the transmission cooler is bypassed.
