Well Im still new to the world of Automatic trannys. Only had one other truck with an auto but never got around to hooking up the trans temp. So my question is what is normal operating temp on a 48re. I have only had my the gauge hooked up for about 5 days and have noticed to difffrent reading. When I first put it in, it was reading about 165 then yesterday I went for an hour drive and when I got back was putting threw town and I was reading 180, never got any hotter then that just seamed to stay there tell I got home. Anyone have any numbers I can base these readings off of that would help.

Thanks

Back to the top. I didn't see any answers. I know guys have the gauges. I can't help on the Dodge but ran temps in my 95 F350 with the E4OD. I would say that normal transmission temps are 160 to 180. Higher when towing (uphill, outside temp, etc. ). I would see temps as high as 210F, but would recover fast when over the hill, or faster speeds.

Justin,

My trans temp runs between 150/165 empty, and between 180/195 pulling my 5'er. I have a mag-hytech deep pan which could help keep my temps down. When highway driving, it seems to stay on the cooler side, I assume thats from not working as hard and having more air pass bye it. just my . 02 cents. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help Willy. Forgot to say that I have my sending unit screwed into the 2nd angeld test port on my transmission (from what I have herad thats the best place for acuarate temp with out taping into the pan or the lines). Not sure if that will have anything to do with diffrent temps from other people but just checking.

Trans Temp

Since I started pulling my fiver the highest temp I have seen is 176. Most of the time without a load under 150. I don't see alot of temp change and I have driven in over 100 degree temps.

well after having the transmission temp hooked up for a while I have figured out that while crusing or just puting threw town its around 150 to 165 and when I "Get It" around the corners and on take off I can get it up to 180 but thats about as high as I have got it. Thanks for the help

I just got my temp gauge hooked up last week and I'm seeing an average of 140, empty on the freeway. Mine is connected to the PCM using stock sending unit.
