Have had my truck into dealer now the 4th time and a ride with the rep Too. Complaints of vibrations, no torque converter lockup and hunting for gears while driving.

I was told nothing wrong with truck needs to break in more but at end of ride with rep driving my truck and an 05 same truck and the trans not acting the same he still said he didn't feel it was a significant problem, even with the new truck getting 5 MPG higher than mine and not shifting the same, also have had repeated check engine light so at end of ride the dealer put DRB on truck and wow a torque converter code, they say for the first time but have had same code come up on dash every time.

Today they called to say they replaced the torque converter and pump but wouldn't replace filter unless it was needed. The service writer is driving truck tonight and they're supposed to return truck tomorrow, ( not holding my breath).

The truck has been like this since new and torque converter never locked up until January then was very intermittent ( total 10 times maybe).

How much damage has really occurred to this transmission? Is it possible for a pump and converter to be bad and not screw up the rest of the trans?

I've been turning wrenches for years but always sent out auto trans problems. Figured it had to have filings go through the rest of transmission.

I filed for lemon law and this is their last repair attempt.

Truck has 9200 miles on it and I bought it the end of August. Does anybody have any thoughts?? Sorry for the long post

I have vibration too, same trans. I don't know what torque converter lock up should sound or feel like so I don't think I would notice it, would I? Give me a hint I would like to know what it exactly does.

I doubt there was any damage to the transmission. A bad pump would definitly cause this issue. Hopefully the replacement of the TC and the pump will cure the problem for you. So far mine has been fine. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed.

I have three trucks with the 48re, two '03s and the '05. We did cook one at 67k in the '03 QC but I have been really happy otherwise. You obviously got a bad one for some reason. Sounds like you are getting them to fix it though. I wouldn't for one second let them fix it and not change the fluid and filter. Don't let them tell you what they will do, you tell them, as the customer what you want, and stick to it. If this doesn't fix the problem, follow through with the lemon law and find a better dealer for the next one.

There has been alot of discussion on this site about vibrations, Numerous problems/fixes. Torque converter lockup is when the converter engages clutches to drive direct to transmission, feels almost like a 5th gear, when engaged the RPM wont jump up or down with the throttle, mine was revving 500 RPM when light throttle and dropping 1200 RPM when let off had no engine braking and real lousy mileage 11. 5 on highway at 65 MPH. If converter working properly @ 75 MPH about 1950-2000 RPM's with 3. 73 gears.

They say it's all set going to pick it up tonight and hook it to my trailer and head for the mountains. We'll see.

Hope your vibration is not as bad as mine Numbing hand and legs.

Good Luck

Jay

My 04. 5 has 26,000 miles on it and the transmission is horrible. It feels like its searching for gears and when it finds one it throws itself into gear. Every time someone takes a ride in my truck they get a look on there face and ask about the trans. Is something wrong??? I've been told that this is how the 48re shifts. My 98 truck shifts ALOT smoother with 180,000 miles on it. What should i do?

Well went and picked up the truck at the dealer today. Told the torque converter locks up fine now they drove it over 100 miles, nice truck they say, get on the highway and to my disappointment my torque converter still is not locking, :--)

Called the service manager before i got home and he doesn't know what to do. Big surprize, they don't even recognize lockup and now the truck vibrates more and at lower speeds, also a big clunk under the pass. floor - didn't do that before.

Guess its time for the lemon law but no 6 spd HD :{ anybody know where to find one near New England, Hopefully Chrysler will be helpful at this point so I don't have to get a lawyer just a new truck
