the Cummin's Prayer Tis the Reason for the Season

Happy new year

Found a use for a 4BT that is going to be used as power for stationary genset. The motor came as a complete long block, no air cleaner. There has to be some sort of standard of air flow, have seen pictures with anything from cone type air cleaner to the one pictured below, Prefer the type below but need to know air flow rate. Cummins Parts counter man couldn't find anything ( didn't we have a post on inept counter people not long ago?)

Also looking for ideas for a muffler system to quiet down the exhaust note as much as possible, Gen-set will be in an enclosed mini barn, insulated to help with both cold and noise. Exhaust stack will go out the roof.

Thanks BIG

I'll see what I can find tomorrow, have a generic Cummins book that offers some basic stuff like that for 4B's.

You can probably go with the disposable air cleaner, it will out live the engine using it like that.

Thanks for any help Mike, I seen the Donaldson online and called but nobody home until Monday.

Thanks again, Parts Yoda!!!

FWIW, if its going to be inside an enclosure, you can but a dry filter element that clamps directly to the turbo inlet and save yourself the mounting and filter housing.
Caterpillar has went to this on their C-9 thru C15 powered gensets.

I didn't know if this was going to be any good, I know that some run an air cleaner on high performance motors that are almost good enough, but then again their not to worried about how long the motor is going to last, they rebuild so much anyway. The one in this picture, I can get several different brands of them, but I didnt know. I called a Big Truck wrecking yard and asked about a air cleaner from a 379 pete they have them but want an arm and leg for the things.

BIG,
Could you make your own filter housing from a 1st gen filter box and use a 1st gen air filter?
They are just reinforced plastic with a metal collar on the 5" supply hose nipple.

Big,

That would a 3" (maybe even 2 1/2") connection on that if I remember right???? I am hunting for the little plastic disposable one that they used to use on the 4BT bread / panel van conversions back in the late '80s. Just a 3" rubber 90 degree elbow off of the turbo and then right into the air cleaner unit.
Will have a picture shortly....

Gman was looking at that already, wondeing about the Dodge air box's I just didn't know if they would be enough CFM, I guess they would being a 6 cyl vs a 4 cyl

2nd page down, the ECC series offer a couple with 3" outlet if that is what you have.

Mike.

I looked at the Donaldson cat. but like I said they are closed until Monday. will have to give them a call.

I would like to go out and measure the turbo to see what it is, If I did that right now I could be alone for awhile, the wife is having a moment, Im SURE THAT ALL OF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED THE WRATH OF THE WIFE SYNDROME.

And of course its all my fault for BREATHING in and out!!!! DAMN ME ANYHOW!!! :-laf

Thanks for all the info and thoughts.

If you lived just a bit closer I could set you up with a Donaldson unit from a 281CI (or larger) International farm tractor. Plenty of CFM, metal air can and all the fittings to hook it up. I have a couple of them sitting on the shelf in my parts bunker.
Just remember your CFMs are 80% of your cubic inch divided by 1/2 X RPM. Your little engine is SMALLci and the RPMs are also lower than the 5.9s will have at full speed pulling.

The Motor wont be running anywhere close to max RPM, my Nephew's brought the Gen from Calif. when they came for a visit over the holidays , we hooked it all up and fired the motor to make sure it was working, the Motor will run at 1800 RPM to achieve the max output of the generator. Hoping to get as many hours per gallon as I can, its going to run the shop ONLY, Im looking into getting some machines that require more power than what I have ran to the shop now, So I thought that a power supply of its own would be better.

I was looking at Greg Harmans idea, my BIL has an old 3rd gen air cleaner box, just have to get some kind of reducer to make a go of it. Mounting I don't think will be a problem make a bracket and bolt it to the motor and the box to the bracket, its got plenty of room, not like I have to fit it under the hood of a truck and close the hood.
