What do you think? A good candidate for a cummins swap?

compressor relocation

I am currently working on a repower that most call stupid. I am finding it quite a challenge that I am enjoying. I am putting a Cummins 4BT in a 1982 Camaro. My current situation is that The engine I bought was origonally mated to a 4 speed manual trans. I am mounting it up to a Th700R4 trans. I had a custom torque converter made and I am currently looking for a throttle cable bracket so that I can mount my TV cable. I am told that the 1989 to 1992 throttle cable bracket from the cummins 6bt will work well for this application, but I am having a difficult time finding one. Does any one have an idea where I can find a throttle cable bracket from a 1989 - 92 6bt?

I'm a die hardcamaro nut. What rear are you using? Are you using sub frame connectors? a 3. 06 first gear, 700r4 what a stump pulling, even with 3-1 rear gears it'll fly. did ypu have to adapt the transmission? Just be careful of the adjustment on the cable. if it is off by much it'll screw with the transmission...

Not sure where you could find a braket...

The throttle control bracket(s) is a Cummins part(s). Best bet is to find them in a salvage yard. But because the 4B is 2 cylinders shorter I think you will find it hard to fit the factory brackets in the engine. I think that the fuel filter is going to get in the way. I own a 92 CTD and compareing the two it does not look like a easy fit on the 4B. I hope you find an answer because I need one to fit on my wife's 4B with a 46RH going into the Willys.

PS, hows the engine mounts doing?

Steve

Right now this car has the stock rear. I am not sure what the gearing is yet. The car has be tampered with to much to check the numbers. It was origonally a 305 upgraded to a 350 4 bolt main from a truck. The 4bt came with an adapter for a sae 3 bell housing so the 700R4 fits nicely. The problem I had was the torque converter was an inch away from the flywheel so I had a custom torque converter built to fit the new flywheel. This also changed the torque converter from a 3 mt piece to a 6mount converter.

The mount I got from you is working good on the durango but not good on the camaro. To tight in the frame rails. I think I am going to have to use a high mount for the a/c with a single pully. Do you happen to have the part number for the Throttle linkage bracket? I was looking at some pictures from my old 89 repair manual and I think that it may just clear that fuel filter.

Thanks

The main bracket is pn# 3919921. My parts book doesn't list the complete assembly, but with the main bracket number Cummins people should be able to get the complete assembly.

It's also listed as option TL9023. There is also a support bracket pn# 3918947.

Of course all of these number can and will be superceded, but thats just the way they operate.

Thanks Steve. that helps alot. I started working on some linkage today I found a bell crank from a old GM throttle body and made a mount to fit it on. That is as far as I got today. To many other things to do. I will keep an update going.

I got my throttle linkage made up and placed the engine in the camaro. I am really gonna have to modify the hood. I bought a carb linkage/tv cable bracket and modified it to extend away from the intake manifold then I took the a bracked from a fuel injected camaro and modified it to mount behind the fuel pump.

There was a guy who put a non turbo 6. 2 diesel in a corvett. He supposably got 40mpg. So I would think witht he aero dynamics it should be around 35mpg. You will definatly need a smaller turbo then stock, because with the lite car you won't stress the engine enough to get the big turbo moving. A HY35 would probably work, but that may be to big. Good luck.

4BT in a Camaro?? Are you planning on using a 12" cowl hood?

Yeah, really! I'd like to see some more pics of it in the engine bay, and how high it sticks out. I'm not being critical, I think its a good idea, but boy is that thing going to be hard to conceal...

I'd say 30+mpg would be a given considering most of the other conversions are 25+ with 4 wheel drive and taller, heavier trucks.

Good luck! Oo.

the engine sticks out about 6 inches with the hood down. I am sliding the engine back another 2 inches so the height will be a little less. I really didn't think that it was to bad. It is under the hood in the back. It only sticks up in the front of the engine bay. I am gonna change the routing of the boost tube so that it will either come through a intercooler or around the front of the engine bay. I will hand fab the hood scoop out of fiberglass and I think the finished product will be supriseing.

Time magazine did an article about a car in the early '80's about a mercury with a small perkins engine in it called Moody's magic machine. That car got some where around 70 miles to the gallon. Going from Orlando Fl to Washington DC on one tank of fuel. I am hoping to see around 40 mpg with the O/D trans, and the 3. 42 rear, and 28 in tires. I should be in a good spot. 1300 Stall. Mathamadically 1900 rpms at 70 mph. We will see. I am "hoping" to produce smoke around new years. We will see. You all know how things can change.

I was thinking about doing that conversion with an 80's Caprice. People called me crazy and told me it wouldn't fit. By Golly they were wrong!

Time to find a 4bt!

Nice!

I have seen someone use a few elbows and tube to make an intake that flows around the front of the valve covers and then back around to the intake manifold for clearance.

Are you a member of the cummins 4bt group on yahoo? A lot of good tech on there...

I am not a member of the cummins 4bt group on yahoo but I have viewed it from time to time. I agree there are alot of good tech on there
