Engine Mount Brackets

850 Hp

The company I work for has a Winco generator with the 4BT in it that was totaled in a trailer jackknife. The engine appears to be undamaged. Has anyone done an insurance buy back on something like this? Do you make an offer or does the insurance set the price? I haven't had a chance to talk to our GM about it. The engine is a CPL 0793 rated at 86 HP at 1800 RPM, serial no. 44201563, is turbo charged but not intercooled. It has a Lucas inline injection pump. I forgot to look at the hour meter but it is a '87 model and hasn't seen a lot of use. I would guess less that 3,000 hours on it. I am thing of repowering a Case tractor with it. What should I pay for something like this?

Kim,

If the price is set like autos, the insurance company will call 3 auto wreckers in the area and ask for bids on the wreck. Owner can match highest bid. I did this with my 86 Jeep.

I'd expect the stator would be OK. Not sure of the rotating poles or shaft. The electrical cabinet took the brunt of it and it looked to be pretty trashed. I'm sure it would be repairable, but probably not worth it unless you could do it mostly yourself. We repair mining equipment including electric motors and generators, but it is easier and probably cheaper to let the insurance replace it. The external sheetmetal of the generator itself is about 75% trashed. It bent the frame that the engine/generator itself is mounted to. It was originally on it's own axle, but we pulled that out and mounted it on a tandem axle flat bed. The trailer is junk. A guy would have to pull the engine/generator out of it and start over with a frame and enclosure. It was a 480 volt 3-phase with a 120 volt transformer that we used to run field boring equipment, lights, etc.

I would guess that the govenor is set for 1800 RPM and is not the right kind for use in a tractor. You might need a different fuel pump.

T. Baker: Are you saying that the rpm can't be varied with a throttle linkage, or just that the top rpm is limited to 1800? Pto rpm on the tractor's tach says 1700 so 1800 top would be fine for my use.

Lucas

Gen set pump governors are different. You should look into that. If it can be bought at a really good price, it is still workable. I don't know anything about the lucas injection pumps but have a very low opinion of lucas electrical mainly because so few parts available around here.

What is the Case tractor? Does it currently have a Cummins? It would not be impossible for the crank to be different at the flywheel.

I'm saying it might be hard to get it to run at anything other than 1800 RPM. Usually gen sets have a totally different govenor system in them and usually you can only make sligh adjustments on the speed setting to get it to 60 cyls per sec. I don't know for shure. You could probably buy the right pump and swap it out.

Thanks for the info guys. I guess I better check with Cummins and see what a pump would set me back. The tractor is an 830 gas and it would take quite a bit of work to make the conversion. I'm a welder/machinist and have access to all the equipment I'd need to do it.

Call thease guys about their 4BTs for a price comparison. They might have a pump to sell used as well.

I got my engine from them and it seems to be a very good engine.
