How to buy a motor for swapping into a 79 f250 over the internet

Power Brakes

I've started looking at my '85 1/2 ton short bed Dodge Prospector for a 4BT fit. With a GM bellhousing (ala bread van SM465 setup) with a 8 1/4" length , 1" thick Advanced Adapters converter, Dodge NV4500 (12 3/8" length) and a 6 1/4"transfer case adapter, I seem to be short of clearing the firewall by about 4". Has anyone done this setup or close to it? Appreciate any input.

The truck had the automatic 400 before I bought it. Would the automatic equiped 1/2 ton Dodge have a shorter driveshaft than a manual equiped version?

You don't need to use an Advance Adapter for the bellhousing. Find a Dodge Cummins core and get the Dodge pattern bellhousing plate off of it. You can use all the same Dodge parts from the 6BT on the 4BT (clutch, flywheel, starter, accessories, etc).

Dodge Core

Thanks for the reply Joe,

I did think about that later after I already had my engine. My 4BTA came with the Gm bellhousing and the 12" clutch at no extra $. The Advanced Adapter plate is $270. I have to do about $225 more work on the GM setup in the way of resurfacing the flywheel and buying a new clutch and pressure plate. If I buy a used Dodge bellhousing, flywheel and starter, I'm wondering how much more I would have to spend to get those to like new condition? Any guesses on the parts U mentioned and the rework costs? I seem to remember the starters being around two bills. Any cost cutting ideas would be greatly appreciated.

i paid .....

800 for the 4bt

100 for the adapter and bellhousing for a cummins 6bt (its 9. 5" long total)

50 for a used dodge starter

200 for a used resurfaced flywheel (300)new

i have 800 in the nv4500

do you need measurements? the nv4500 shifter sticks up 9 3/4 inches from the front of the case. so i have 19 1/4 inches from the rear of the engine to the shift tower.

Found your post on the M715. Sweet! Your lower vertical lever I believe is a fuel cutoff on your VE. I have some Bosch manuals and one Cummins injection pump manual that show that. That should be a fun project. I have to see photos of your vehicle.

Nice prices in the reply to me. You did a lot better on your 4BT price than I did. Did you use the Clutch plate ass'y that was in your bellhousing? Are there more parts engines where you got your parts? I need some sources for these parts if you know of any, especially an NV4500 at that price.

What is your length on the NV4500? 12 3/8"? Which transfer case adapter are you running? (same as NP208?) I'd like to ask more questions about that if you are.

Thanks for the NV4500 shifter measurement. I don't have my N4500 yet so I was guessing at where that was. I could use your transfer case adapter information and mount location measured from some reference if that's not too much to ask for.

I would like to run the 5. 9L flywheel. Someone reported that it really smoothed out the 4BT. Have you been able to witness a comparison as far as vibrations between the Dodge and GM 12" clutch flywheel setup? I also read that using the marine balancer helps alot on the 4BT.

ok. whew!

i found out that was a manual cut off.

BUT what is the round sending unit in the block BY the injection pump? what is the round sending unit in the end of the injection pump? i think, the solonoid is mounted nest to the injection pump, right?

other questions.

im using a 6bt adapter from a 96 dodge.

im using a 6bt bellhousing from the same dodge.

i had bought 3 nv4500's off this board for 500. 2 needed syncros and one a first gear for sure and has no input shaft (its for sale for 100 dollars). so i bought a GM 2wd tailshaft and assorted parts after i determined 2wd dodge was 7 inches longer and WAAAAY to long for me. you see im going to run a DIVORCED NP205, after all, the truck was originally equipped with a np200 divorced case.

im using a stock dodge 6bt flywheel for nv4500 that i got from Peak sales in Texas

im going to use a stock dodge clutch, and pressure plate.

i would say for any cummins parts try peak sales.

blumenthal has been good on nv4500 parts

the lenght of the case, and the CASE only of a nv4500 is right around 12 3/8. i would assume that the 4x4 tailhousing is between 4 and 6 inches. any measurements for the case, height diameter, or measurements from the motor mounts etc... ..... let me know. its not mounted at this time... .

Sending units

By sending units I take it you're refering to electrical? The sending unit on top of the Bosch pump is the fuel solenoid. Any unit on the side of the block would be most likely an oil pressure sending unit. mIne happens to be on the oil filter housing but is not an electric type. I've sent you a private message for more information from you. It's easy to remove the sending unit and determine what it does if you have an electric volt-ohm test meter.

Thanks for the parts sources.
