Hello,

The turbine in my 4BT's turbo seems to have quite a bit of play (about 0. 080" from side to side  ), so I suppose it's safe to assume the bearings are shot. Are there any good/cheap sources for turbos? Since I will be replacing it anyway, is there something easy I could do to increase engine output?

Thanks,

Mikel

Don't worry too much about that amount of side to side play... if it moves quite a bit along the same axis as the shaft itself... then you get to worry.

Run it - see how it works out. You'll know if it's a bad turbo or not pretty quickly.

Has the turbine or compressor started to contact their respective housings? If so - it needs to be rebuilt.

Matt,

I only drove the truck for about 50 miles (donor Frito Lay truck) and I didn't notice anything abnormal. The blades don't touch the housing and I'm yet to check for axial play.

Thanks,

Mikel

I wouldn't worry about it if there's no axial play and the wheel doesn't touch the housing... especially if the motor is all stock...

when/if you replace the turbo, *I* would buy a used HY35 and put it on there... should broaden up the powerband considerably!!!

im trying to souce a hy35 now. mikel and i are doing a similar project.

i understand the definition of MUCH, but is that to say it produces more horsepower and torque? if so, how much more? or does the motor just spool up faster??

im new to diesels.

for the most part, the amount of horsepower you make is going to be dictated by how much fuel you run...

but the HY35 is going to spool up a lot quicker, which will bring torque numbers up considerably! :)

I'm kinda surprised they put such a (relatively) large turbo on the 3. 9... but I guess the anticipated duty cycle on those engines was much higher, and the larger turbo would be a little more efficient under constant heavy load... also, they didn't have the HY35 back then... they had a smaller turbo, but any smaller would be too small...

I think the HY would be a match made in heaven for the 3. 9

well im going to TRY ang fab one up. i dont know how hard it will be to match up to exhaust etc.

i do not currnetly have a wastegate. (i was told a hy35 does)

i do not have pyro, rpm,or boost guages. i know i need to add those when i add the hy35.

i also have a very leaky rear main seal that i have to deal with. so i might as well seal it up out of the truck, i can replace the turbo while im at it.

if, for whatever reason, you're unable to make the HY35 work, I would put a 12cm wastegated turbine housing on the H1C...

gauges will obviously be a good thing, but if you don't turn up the fuel much, you wouldn't really "need" them IMHO.

Forrest

HY35 = wastegated

H1C as found on the 4BT = not wastegated.

if for whatever reason you can't make the HY35 work, I would put a 12cm wastegated turbine housing on the H1C.

ok, well before i buy the thing which one is easier to use and cheapest???

i cann call you on my dime if its easier

Hey Lee, I just bought the rear main seal and it was only like $38. 00. I thought in a previous post you said it was $80, which might include the metal cover, but you shouldn't need that. $38 was from Cummins also.
