ok i just changed my transmission fluid today(redline MTL) And it only took 4 quarts. i drained the transmission by taking out both of the bottom bolts on the front but i guess that extra half a quart hung to the metal in the transmission. Will it hurt anything? also the truck had been shifting like CRAP before i changed the fluid and now it shifts Great but grinds 4th gear EVERYTIME unless i double clutch and shift slow. Any idea's? syncro? It if was all of the gears i would start to thing maybe throw out bearing is going out? i did notice alot of clutch dust on the bottom of the bellhousing. any input is greatly apreciated

My 5600 grinds like mad going into 4th when it is cold. After it is warm, or in the summer not much of a problem. When it is cold though, I need to shift it very slow. I changed the fluid at 60k this condition didn't become noticable till 80-90k. I am thinking of taking my short throw shifter out and going back to stock or change the fluid again to try to rectify the problem. For now, no speed shifting when its cold. If you find the problem let me know.

My set up has the short throw shifter, con ofe, and oem fluid.

Maybe your clutch disk isnt fully disengaging.

How bad is the grind?

Try replacing your slave and master setup.
that is what i am thinking, it only grinds for about 3-5 seconds before going in gear, but it only does it in 4th and sometimes 3rd gear

You can still shift fine into all other gears? If so, your clutch sounds like it is functioning normally. I would have to assume that your syncro is going out. Old crappy fluid low on lubricity, allowed your syncro some added friction to engauge. New fluid high lubricity syncro doesn't want to slow the gear as easy as before.

Weidner: I would switch to a lighter fluid for the colder shift quality in the winter, you might have issues in the summer though of a hot grind, that is not as likey though.

A syncro's surface is v-ribbed like a drive belt. when worn the v-ribbes are almost gone allowing gear oil to stay in the gear/syncro surface area acting as a lubricant (not good when shifting). A new syncro has sharp v-ribbs and when you shift the oil is forced out allowing the peaks to contact the gear and slow the gear to the same speed as the hub. This is why viscosity is important, to thick and you get a hard shift.

Do you guys skip gears when driving unloaded?

well i wouldn't say it shifts "fine" when cold it is alittle hard shifting into all the gears just 3rd and 4th are the only ones that actually grind, going from 1-2nd it seems like it catches before falling into gear, like it temp. hangs up for a sec. How hard is it to replace a syncro on the 5600?
