I have a friend who has a '97 1500. He put his truck in 4WD last week to make sure everything worked, and it did, including the indicator light which now won't stop working. Any ideas? Thanks.

Try jiggling the transfer case shift handle while moving. The first time I put my truck into 4wd the light came on but the handle wasn't far enough into position. Needless to say I was a little furious over the useless tires as I just sat there and spun the wheels. Then I figured out that the gears weren't in 4wd and it really wasn't that helpless after all.

Same thing happend to me. Truck was one week old and I hit a deep mud puddle. Pulled the 4-wheel drive and the back end was all over the place (lite said it was in 4-wheel drive).

The next time I shifted hard and everything engaged!

If your buddy's light won't go out his axle may be stuck in 4wd. The switch for the light is located in vacuum actuator on the front axle, passenger side and should only go on when the collar is the front wheel locked position. It may be a bad switch or the vacuum hose to the actuator is off or leaking. Better check it out before he wears out his tires.

Just noticed you are asking about a 1500, I don't know anything about them though it may be the same.
