The other day when I went to engage my 4wd, I couldn't get it to go in. The lever would move ok, but it stayed in 2wd. After I crawled under it and jiggled the lines at the axle, it went in to 4wd just fine. The light came on and I can't get it shut off. I'm pretty sure that it isn't in 4wd, but the light just will not go off. Any ideas?

Thanks

John

John,

I had the same problem in my ol 96 Gas 4X4. Turned out it was the sensor down on the front axle, anyway I think that's where it is. It was still under warrenty so I can't help you on the cost.

The axle disconnect is located on the rear of the front axle under the pass side. It is operated by a vacuum motor that will pull a slip ring to lock the front end. At the same time, the light is activated by (I believe) the rod on the end of the vacuum motor. These motors have been known to go bad and it is quite possible that the front end is still locked. Try to turn the front driveshaft by hand. If it turns, then the motor is disconecting but the 'sensor' is stuck on. If the driveshaft doesn't turn then the motor is either broken or stuck or you have another problem elsewhere in the system (vac switch on top of transfer case, hole in line, etc. . )
