Mine only does this when the idle is way down, like when its cold. So I would suggest turning your idle up a little bit. This should be done with the a/c on if you have it.

Does it do it in 4x4 high?

A vibration that rattles the transfer case shifter is usually an indication of other problems.

Check the fluid level and rear drive line for u-joint failure.

If all is well there the drive chain may be stretched and causing the vibration.

i had that shifter rattle in my 97. i could here it cruising down the freeway. i just stuffed some junk in the boot to try and hold the shifter still.

Follow this info from DBazley. It is a PITA but it will fix the rattle.

"Hey, on that wicked rattle in the 4wd lever, I believe there is a TSB on it. The fix was done to mine - it involves putting a valve spring to quiet the vibration, between the shift lever and whatever is adjacent to it, under the boot. I saw the Dodge tech do it to my truck back in '97, so I'm quite certain.

Let me know if you can't dig up the TSB, I could look under my truck to verify - hasn't rattle since they did it !

TSB's here: Dodge Ram Information or .org"

My response: "I followed DBazley's advice on the TSB for the 4x4 shifter rattle. I first tried to bend the lever as shown in the TSB. That didn't fix anything. I ordered the spring using the part # from the 'backyard fixes' link at the bottom of the TSB. After some cussing and struggling, the spring went in. I have been rattle-free for almost 1000 miles. I love it. Thanks DB. "

I tried the Mitsubishi spring fix. I bought the spring and just could not figure out how to get the dang thing in there. I ended up having DTT fix it. Simple carburetor spring from the shift linkage to the frame.

Here are a couple of pics...

I dunno, as I had posted to someone before my rattle (at road speed) was just the nut under the knob cap!. Retightened it 20K ago - never heard from again. Just pry the knob decal button out and you'll see it. :)

This is what happened to mine, drove me crazy. Then I took off the cap and loose nut, no problems since!!
