I have a 97 2500 4x4 and live in Big Bear Ca. I put 33 12. 50 16. 5 mud terrain tires on for winter driving. Last snow storm I drove in to town {with about 15 to 20 lbs of tire pressure} and pulled in to a plowed and clean asphalt parking lot and got about 15 yards and heard a loud, expensive "CRACK" from I think the right front. Now I have no 4 wheel drive. I think I broke an axle but before I blindlly start tearing things apart, I wonder if someone can help me with a diagnoses proceedure that will zero in on my problem.

Thanks much... . Geomazz

Provided your knuckle u-joints look OK, try the following... ...

Kick a drain pan under the CAD cover, remove the vacuum lines, electrical connector, and the 4 mounting bolts. Pull that unit off and have a look around. You can slide the shift collar by hand which will allow you to turn or wiggle either the inner or outer shaft. You will also be able to spin the front driveshaft by hand provided the transfer case is in 2WD.

Also look at the shift fork and shaft in the cover. I have snapped a shift fork shaft already this winter.

More of a Bang when mine pooched than a Crack but that could be a regional dialect thing... ... . :-laf
