4x2 auto to 4x4 auto swap

Hey guys,



I figured this would have been discussed in the past but all of me searches are only turning up different year swaps or auto to manual swaps.



I want to take a 1992 4x2 auto trans and put it in a 1992 4x4 that has an auto also.



Is it doable?



There are different part numbers for them but I have to believe it is just for the difference in the final output.

Yeah I looked into this as well you'll need to disassemble the trans, replace the output shaft and coupler.

On a 518 auto, you don't have to get that involved. You simply swap the overdrive units on the back of the trans. The output shaft is the same in the main trans case.

Swap the OD unit between the two transmissions and your good to go.



While it is possible to just swap the OD units there is a process to doing it and you will need some shims to correctly set the clearances. The clearances in whole drive train from front to back start with setting up the the OD. If you don't get it right you will have lube and engagement problems.
