4X4 front end link failure

My cousin has an '05 4X4 and called me to ask what I thought about what happened. He said he started hearing a noise in the front end. He went under to have a look and found a suspension (control arm) link cracked in half. He maintains that he didn't hit anything.

Has anyone ever had a problem like this? I did a search and came up empty.

I have seen it a couple of times. I guarantee if you inspect it closely that it was nicked/bumped/hit on something before it failed. If you look at the shape, once it is damaged it will fold up under heavy stress. Sometimes they get damaged by trying to lift them by the arms.
