4x4 light on the dashboard does not come on when 4 wheel drive is engaged, in either hi or low. It does not come on either upon initials start during the light test, but I can't remember if it is supposed to:confused

Questions

1. Does the 4x4 light up during dashboard light test?

2. Is the bulb in the dashboard replaceable ?

3. Where is the switch located on the transfer case?

Thanks Pete

The switch, on my 96, is not on the xcase its on the vacuum motor on the CAD unit on the front axle. Pull the elect. connector off the CAD and jump the two wires together, if the light is working it should come on. It may be that the CAD motor is not working. Never needed to replace the bulb so can't help with that I'm sure it is replaceable.

Thanks Floyd, my 2002 does not have a CAD, everything turns, all the time :). Haven't had it on the lift yet to poke around to see if I can find the switch. Does your 4x4 light come on during the light test on initial start up?

Pete,

I believe the light should illuminate on inital key activation, IIRC. The switch will be on your T-case on your truck, since you don't have CAD. It'll be on top, driver side, IIRCagain... . Should just be a ball and spring, two wire switch. I'll try to remember to check mine this afternoon. Also, if you run through the guage test, it also does an illumination test for the lights.

Thanks guys, found the switch on the transfer case, looks looks it went bad.
Can anyone verify the part number for me? The factory Maintenance manual still talks about a CAD and the 2002 parts manual shows a switch but calls it a "switch transfer case mode" but calls the seal for it a "seal vacuum switch" I just want to make sure I get the correct switch for a 2002 and not one for an earlier truck with the CAD. Anyway I show #53001101, and would this be an Dodge specific part, or available at my favorite parts store?

Are you sure that's the correct part number? It should be more like a Chrysler 4289880 if it doesn't have CAD... . I say that, because the number you gave us related to the four port vacuum selector switch, which operates the CAD.....

Dorman manufactures either one... . The number you have should be Dorman number 600-553 or Dorman 49314. That's the vacuum valve switch... .

If you don't have CAD, it should be a Dorman 600-550.

The instrument cluster actuator test will put the instrument cluster into its self-diagnostic mode. In this mode the instrument cluster can perform a self-diagnostic test that will confirm that the instrument cluster circuitry, the gauges, and the CCD data bus message-controlled indicators are capable of operating as designed. During the actuator test the instrument cluster circuitry position each of the gauge needles at various calibration points, illuminate each of the segments in the Vacuum-Fluorescent Display (VFD), and turn all of the CCD data bus message-controlled indicators on and off.

Begin the test with the ignition switch in the Off position.

Depress the odometer/trip odometer switch button.

While still holding the odometer/trip odometer switch button depressed, turn the ignition switch to the On position, but do not start the engine.

Keep the odometer/trip odometer switch button depressed for about ten seconds, until CHEC appears in the odometer display, then release the odometer/trip odometer switch button.

A series of three-digit numeric failure messages may appear in the odometer display, depending upon the failure mode. If a failure message appears, refer to the Instrument Cluster Failure Message chart for the description and proper correction

Well that is the part number in the 2002 dodge parts catalog for the only sensor mounted in the transfer case. Like i said ,not sure since the factory service manual still talks about CAD. Anyway, light in dashboard is good, comes on when putting the 2 wires going into the switch together. I removed the switch and Ohmed it out, it does not make or break moving the ball in and out. I will start looking for a switch tomorrow
Thanks Pete

Well, non of the part numbers worked, parts computer at o'reilly was wrong as well.
The correct part ended up being a Borg Warner fwd21, all is well now, everything is working correctly
Thank everyone for the help
