Hi new to the club hope i am asking this question in the right section. Went wheeling this weekend in my 2500 02' 6 spd. First time out in the dirt since ive bought the truck. And i noticed that whenever i am in 4 wheel i have a noise that happens when ever i place a load on the truck Climbing a hill or over rocks. It does not take much to make the noise just a little load to where i need to give the truck a little throttle. It does not get louder and or faster with increased engine speed. It sounds to me like something is slipping with a slight clanking noise but 4 wheel drive is funtional. I am not able to locate front axle or transfer case but wanted to see if anyone has had similar problems. It is hard to descibe but it is not loud and it doesnt seem to efect the truck but i did nothing to push the truck to see what was broke. I just know 4x4 works. It can't be nothing because as i stated it is not loud but it is very noticeable. There is definitley something wrong but i do not know where to start in terms of locating and fixing the problem. Thanks for any help i know this is not very informational but i thought i would ask to see if it might be something simple and or get some ideas on how to narrow it down.

I am also interested in running a new exhaust and intake to help my truck breathe and possibly help with mileage. What is good and what works. What are the pros and cons of 4" vs. 5" and what kind of egt drop can i expect by running either or with an intake. Thanks for any and all info.

If the noise is only in 4wd, it may not seem to change with the engine, especialy in low range. But I bet it does change with ground speed.

Make a real good check on the doubel cardigan joint at the top of the front drive shaft. Also check other u-joints. could even be the front pinion bearing. My double cardigan dried up last year, it was more of a sqeaky sound, but it only made noise under load.
