Bought another truck 1996 Dodge 1500 extended cab 4X4. The 4X4 wants to engage during acceleration when in 2WD and the 4X4 wants to disengage in 4WD. I checked the vacuum at the canister. I have 15 psi at an idle on the red line in 2WD and the black line in 4WD. I also applied vacuum to the canister to each side and the vacuum did not leak off.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I can try next?

you might want to check the switch at the transfer case that makes the vacuum change from 2wd to 4wd. there might be some problem there. Also I don't know how to check it. If it seems like the switch thing is outside, then you can check it there. If on the inside, I bet you need to take it to a shop. If the 4x4 or 4x2 is engage or disengage on different selesctions, I would look there first.

I checked out the switch. Shifting the transfer case between 2WD and 4WD causes the vaccum to switch from the red line to the black line. I think I will tear off the CAD and see if it's dirty or debris has found a way in. Thanks for your help.

Let us know what you find. I need to do this on one later in the week. . under accel on pavement do you get a "wobble"? This one the light just stays on, but seems to engage and disengage properly. I know the GV OD was removed recently, maybe its just a linkage issue. .

BTW did you notice any oil contamination in the vacuum lines? If so, it may have trashed some diaphrams in the vacuum system.

Wishing us both luck

Andy

Mine, when you accelerate there is a grinding noise from the front end that sounds like the 4WD is trying to engage when the vehicle is in 2WD. I post as soon as I get a change to tear things apart.

I just ordered a Posi-Lok 4X4 after having numerous problems with the front end not locking. Give it enough time of delayed CAD engagements in and out of 4X4 and the transfer case will grenade...

After tearing everything apart and not finding anything unusual, I broke down and bought a Posi-lok 4X4. I'll get it installed this week. Everything I have read, this should fix my problem for good!
