HI all last night we were driving home form skiing, in 4WD and the 4wd drive light would flicker on and off every few miles and i would hear a clunk from the front end. Also sometimes when i apply the breaks i will hear a clunk from the front end. Has this happened to anybody else?? Any thoughs?? Thanks TIM

2 things come to mind first off make shore the vacuum lines from the transfer case to the front end are all good mine rusted thru. then it comes to trouble shooting you will need a vacuum pump with a gauge.

you will need to check for vacuum in the 2 lines at the front end one will have vacuam in 2wd and the other will have vacuum in 4wd. if this doesn't work like described it is most likely the switch in the transfer case.

if this all pans out good then you will need to see if the cad vacuum canister will hold vacuum without leaking down on both sides if it doesn't you will need to replace the vacuum actuator "250 bucks at the dealer". if this all shows well then it is likely the collar or axle is worn and making it kick out.

TIM,

I agree with RStankevitz that you probably have a vacuum problem. Here's more information that may help you in troubleshooting:

The 4WD light in the cab is controlled by the front axle's center disconnect. That's the shifter that engages and disengages the wheels to each other. That shifter is operated by the truck's vacuum system.

If the CAD (Center Axle Disconnect) shifts to disengage the wheels, the 4WD light will extinguish. If it shifts back, that light will illuminate. I suspect that a vacuum problem is causing it to search for the correct position.

Good luck,

Loren
