4x4 to 2 wheel Drive?

My friend has a 1996 D-250 4X4 with a short cab. He has had numerous problems with his transmission and transfer case... probably due to the extreme conditions that he subjects the truck to... Can that thing be converted to just 2 wheel drive and use the same xmission? I am not that familiar with the 4 wheel drive xmission or the xransfer case input. Seems like an easy fix to me. He would need to change the output shaft and tailhousing on the transmission. It might be easier to find another trans. Then the next question is what about the front end? Is he planning on staying with 4x4 axle? The 2x's have independent suspension.

It might be easier to find another truck. Probably cheaper in the long run too.
