I just got a survey for an independent research company that was gathering info about putting a 5. 0L Cummins into a Dodge 1500. They were clearly trying to see how many of the 2500/3500 segment would be willing to drop to a 1500 if this engine was offered. They presented two engine options: a new turbocharged direct-ignition gasoline engine for no extra charge as well as the 5. 0L Cummins for an additional $4500. They said the gasoline engine would have a towing capacity of 7200lbs and the Cummins would only have a towing capacity of 7000lbs. They gave mpg figures of 20/25 for the Cummins. If they can get that towing capacity up to around 10,000lbs for the little Cummins, I might be interested for my next truck, but otherwise, I'll stick with a 2500.
