Bosch IP, WHERE TO GET and HOWTO REMOVE???

The Conversion Begins!

Just an off the wall question... has anyone dropped a 6bt into an excursion? We're seriously thinking about converting from the powerchoke when the time comes...

Would like to stay with an auto trans. I'm not real familiar with autos mated to the 5. 9. Which AT would be the best in a 4x4 configuration?

Thanks,

kad

I am seriously toying with the idea of buying a choked Powerjoke Excursion and swapping the engine/transmission and tcase from my 2000 in it. I really like my pickup, but many times I would rather have an enclosed cab. Do a search though, there are a LOT of posts on this. Also, on the excursions, how many feet is it from the back of the back seat to the tail? Is it 8ft?

Where'd you get a convertible pickup? And didn't the dealer show you how to put the top up?

:D :D

Its the same rig basicly as a pu get the mounts from destroke or anouther

ford cummins or whom ever and bolt it in

and sell the power joke or use it as a boat anchor

There was an article in Feb Diesel Builder about putting a 5. 9 into a Ford. It was a good article. It went through the steps and listed the company that made the adapters. They said wiring should be left to professionals. Once they were done it looked like a very clean set up.

You can get V-10 Excursions CHEAP!! I would love to do a swap and put my wife in it, it would probably get 18-20MPG with a stock 12valve

i was toying with the idea on my x till it got totaled now i have a 06 drw

nothing beats the room of the excusion though

Cummins Excursion

My 2000 Excursion is now driving powered by a 1994 Cummins 6bta. Use the destroked.com kit from Scott and run the Ford 4R100 automatic transmission. I've discovered that you can save about $1,000 because you don't need to buy an aftermarket transmission controller. Mine is shifting by the VSS alone right now and the manual column lever works even better. I may re-flash the PCM later to modify shifts. I plan to run my boost gauge through the MAP sensor so hopefully that will provide a load input.

It is easier and cheaper to convert from a gas powered Ford to the Cummins when using a 12 valve. If the wiring is intimidating, you could convert the 24 valve to use a Bosch P7100 fuel pump. However, destroked.com can weave the Ford and Cummins wiring harnesses together so that it looks and works as if it came from the factory.

I like how the Diesel Builder article said they did the whole swap in only 2 days. My engine swap cost far more than i could budget and took 7 months for it to roll under its own power again. Take the advice on the forums and it can be a much simpler process.

The Cummins fits in the Ford like it belongs in there. My dad is currently driving the truck and is very upset with me because the Cummins isn't living up to its reputation. The 7. 3 got 11 mpg, dyno was 146 hp. The Cummins is getting about 9 mpg. It won't spin a tire in gravel and drops from 65 mph to below 50 mph climbing hills. My dad says it is not safe to drive with so little power, scary to merge into traffic. Truck probably weighs about 10,000 lbs.

Engine won't start below 30 degrees F without being plugged in or a shot of ether. Lots of work ahead. I know the potential of the 5. 9 is far greater than that of the 7. 3. It will take a lot more time and money to realize those possibilities. Not sure how i might improve the truck's fuel economy, but i still have a goal of 20 mpg. Feel free to ask me questions about the swap.

Bed will fit a load of 4'x8' sheets of plywood. Best to stick with the Ford drivetrain, NVG 271 is your strongest transfer case option, as is a built 4R100 transmission.

MMcCallie, I'm no expert in the matter, but something has to be malfunctioning in your truck. I would expect it to spin a tire in gravel  My 6BT would start right away at 18F without plugging it. Good luck!

It sounds to me like you have low compression, or something wrong with your fuel delivery system. I have an old VE motor in a Suburban and have owned two trucks with p-pumps, and all will start no plugs down to the single digits with a little white smoke and then a bump of the key all day long. I have been to the end of my conversion for some time and a days work would wrap up every detail. I will get it done little by little over the next few months or hire someone to finish. I know that if my motor needed serious work I would have to let it sit or get someone else to do it. These conversions can try a persons patience.

The configuration with the most room is to remove the 3rd row bench seat above the rear tires and fold down the middle row bench at the 2nd set of side doors. This equates to an 8' pickup bed and is how i leave my truck unless carrying passengers, i fold the middle row up to carry 3 passengers on that bench. Far less room if you leave the last bench in. Like a Suburban but bigger.

I might be able to start my swap this summer, the sooner the better. The stock excursion with the V-10 is averaging about 9. 5 mpg. I'm planning on using the drivetrain from a 2004 dodge (305 HPCR engine, trans, & transfercase).

GOT-Torque,

Would probably be a lot simpler to use your Ford transmission and transfer case. Just slid mine back a little, that was all it needed. Absolutely no wiring for the transmission or transfer case. No transmission controller, it shifts via the VSS and or manually. Your NVG 273 transfer case is your strongest option anyway. Same with a built 4R100.

What did it cost to have the 4R100 beefed up? So after your engine swap, the trans shifts exactly like you want it too? Did you even have to lengthen/shorten your driveshafts then?

I've already got a goerends convertor, ats standalone trans controller and valve body, still need to get a billet flexplate and input shaft.

damn, I was hoping it was 8' from the rear seat to the tail, oh well. I wish Dodge build one of these damn things from the factory. I would buy one for work in a heart beat.

Yeah, if Dodge had built one we'd have saved the $15,000 this nightmare of a project has so far cost. I got screwed over early on, the project was simple. The Ex is just a 137" wheelbase.

My 4R100 transmission went out when i was still driving with the PSD. BTS transmissions are usually about $4,000. Matt Heady can build one far cheaper. At BTS i left paying over $5,000. 00. Very expensive. Long story, but i had to have a completely new transmission, got nothing on the core because my case was cracked. Also bought the upgraded 6. 0 transmission cooler, fluids, new computer chip, dyno runs, etc.

Does my transmission shift exactly the way i want it to? No. I will likely have the PCM reflashed once i have tuned the engine. I will likely hook up my boost gauge through the Ford MAP sensor to provide it with a load input as well.

Transmission shifts at exactly the same speed every time right now. Its OK because i had learned to shift manually like the BTS guys do. Its what they recommend and how they drive. A good driver will always have more control and be able to shift better than a computer. A reflash should make it shift however i want.

I would like more line pressure and faster shifts. It shifts way too smooth right now for my taste. No need to spend almost a grand on a controller. By the way, last time i checked it was cheaper to buy directly from PCS than ATS. Could be different now.

No driveshaft adjustments were needed. Just had to open the slots a little at the crossmember for it to slide back less than an inch. Quick and easy. The destroked.com kit is rated to over 1,000 hp to adapt your transmission. The flexplate is nearly 1/4" thick. It all goes together beautifully.
