I finally dumped the last of my Banks Products Saturday. The 4" pipes and monster muff. I installed a 5" from the end of the true 4" down pipe out of my HTB2 and right behind the transmision brace, it's strait the rest of the way over the axle and behind the wheel. My question is for those who have similar systems. Do you have an in the cab Drone at 2200 RPMs that is VERY loud? I personally love the sound but could do without that bit of annoyance. I am wondering if I had the 4-5 bell closer to the down pipe if that would help.

Also, has anyone had any runins with John Law about the sound volume? I did a forum search and haven't found any complaints about this drone or how to lessen it.

Rebel Ram, Yes I have the loud drown also, I kinda like it and if you ever get the chance have a buddy drive past you at that RPM range, Youll be happy!!! BTW how do you like your HTB2? Ive had mine on for about 2 months and it has been good to me. Do you happen to know the "safe" max boost psi on these things?... . jeremy

Hey Cowboy! I too have had my HTB2 for about 2 months. I love it. Yes, there are other choices, But for the $ I think it was the best choice for me.

I can hit 53 lbs with mine. I called Olee Poole (he's who I got it from) and he said to tune the WG to Max 48 lbs. He said after that its losing efficiency and pumping heat. I havent tuned it yet and can keep the pressure down with my foot. But all in all I like it.

I have the same drone at 2200. In the Texas Penal Code it states that if you have a diesel engine equipped with a turbocharger, a muffler is not requiered because the turbo is considered a restriction just like a muffler. I love that law!

I knocked some of the drone down to a tollerable level with the muffler/header wrap stuff from Summit Racing. I got 2... . 2" rolls and did from the muff up as high as I could go and back. Sprayed it down with some of the sealant spray they recomend and it did knock off the bad, head ringing part.

I could see if a guy only ran his truck around town and no long trips this(drone) might not be a prob, but on 800-1200 mile days, that drone will tweak your noggin'.

I have a pretty bad drone on my truck with the 5"... after a long trip towing, my ears ring!

Only advice I've gotten is to go with a different muffler, and someone said they had good luck welding angle-iron lengths to the exhaust system.

You guys can get rid of or greatly reduce the 2000rpm drone by installing a full flow resonator on your 5" system.

Thats what I had to do to mine. Driving was unbearable.

I bought it from www.sourceautomotive.biz for like 50 bux.

Thank you SO much for that info!!

I've been told time and time again that resonators weren't available for 5", jus 4".

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Whatever you do don't buy an Aeroturbine... . I bought one (5050L) to fix my drone and it made it things worse at 2000-2200rpm, a lot worse. I followed their direction and installed it as far forward as possible but it made things worse. And then I tried mounting it toward the back and it didn't change anything. It also made my mean "big-rig" sounding diesel sound like a ricer on steroids. Yes, you heard me correctly, my CTD sounds like a ricer now with the Aeroturbine (I'll post some sound clips when I have time). My EGT's increased (as I expected) but I bought it because everyone claimed it would get rid of my drone... . LOL! I haven't had time to post a thread on this topic yet but I want to make sure no one makes the same mistake I did by wasting their $$$ on the Aeroturbine or should I say "AeroRicer". I'll give my Aeroturbine away to someone as long as they promise to give it to someone else when they're done laughing at the ricer sound it produces.

Here's how Aeroturbine should market their product:

Want to increase EGT's?

Want to get rid of your Turbo whistle?

Want to increase your drone at 2000-2200rpm's?

Want your 7000lb Cummins Turbo Diesel 4X4 to sound like a Honda Civic with a coffee can muffler?

We have exactly what you're looking for, it's called an Aeroturbine, I mean Aero-Ricer muffler... . Order NOW!

LOL!

Who wants this POS?

I have to disagree on the Aeroturbine. While I can't speak as to the EGT issue, I had mine installed on my '04 right behind the downpipe and straight the rest of the way back and had no problems with drone at all. It didn't sound like a ricer either----more like a somewhat tamed down straight pipe without the harshness/bark. It had plenty of turbo whistle. Got a lot of comments on it too. I'm not saying it's the miracle muffler but it worked well and certainly LOOKED to have good build quality for the money.

EMD,

Unless your '04 had a 2nd Gen engine in it we're talking about two completely different sounding exhausts. My '01 with a 5" straight pipe was loud as hell and had tons of turbo whistle coming out the tailpipe. When we put the 5" Aeroturbine on at a high performance muffler shop it literally brought everyone to tears laughing because it sounded like a ricer when I started it... . it completely killed the sound of the diesel, killed ALL turbo whistle, and sounded like a honda civic when I rev'd it. I had to laugh along with everyone else and just shake my head. I bought it for drone and it made my drone worse than my straight pipe. No one would have ever thought that a little Aeroturbine muffler could completely kill the sound of the straight pipe and make it sound like a ricer but it does. Come on down and listen to my truck and you'll laugh your *** off.

Before I bought my Aeroturbine I was doing some research on another forum and I read a thread from a guy who claimed the Aeroturbine made his truck sound like a ricer too but I didn't believe it..... I thought to myself can you really make a CTD sound like a ricer?... no way..... we'll I believe him now and my truck is living proof. I'll provide some sound clips when I have a chance. And the drone is terrible at 2100-2000rpms...

The 4" Aerturbines might work for some people but the 5" definitely does not work on the 2nd gen.

I'm still looking for a solution to the 5" drone and I'm very anxious to remove my Aeroturbine 5050L. It will be nice to get my get truck back to sounding like a diesel again.

Did it have any other type of muffler on it with the AT? When I first out mine on my '04, I still had the Banks muffler on it-------it didn't sound good but still not like a ricer. I dunno... ...

it's probably the "resonator" portion of the aeroturbine that's killing your turbo whistle...

I'm sure the regular aeroturbine will cause the rest of your problems, but I be the R part is killing the turbo whistle... I messed around with a dynomax bullet on my old truck, and it totally killed all the turbo noise... made the interior resonance worse, etc.

I have messed with different exhaust systems on these trucks possibly more than anyone! LOL! my conclusion is, if you can't deal with straight pipe, you should use a muffler designed for a big truck... it will quiet the exhaust sound considerably, but it will still leave lots of turbo sound through the pipe...
