A exhaust shop here in Rainier is doing 5" systems on our trucks. My brother had the 5 incher put on his truck the day after I got the 4 inch , I now have exhaust envy!

Sure won't hurt & will help a Bombed situation. Exhaust tone will be lower than before & will be able to take more fuel & air. #ad

How much does it cost? Is it from the turbo all the way back? Is it in a kit form? Who is the supplier?

Well, one thing for sure is that 5" is bigger than 4". But will it make any measurable difference? Maybe not.

The cross section area of a 5" tube (19. 6 sq in) is about 1. 5 times that of a 4" tube(12. 6 sq in) so velocities in the 5" tube will be 1/1. 5 or 2/3's that of the 4" tube. But since there is limited space to install the exhaust system (such as over the rear axle) the bends in the larger tubing will have to be tighter (in relation to the tube diameter) than bends in the smaller tubing.

The loss coefficients for a 45 degree smooth radius round elbow will increase from . 22 for a 4" bend where R/D=1. 0 to . 33 for a 5" bend where R/D=0. 75 to fit in about the same space. This means although you have lower velocity through the elbow with the larger tube, the proportional pressure loss through the elbow is greater. Figure 0. 66 velocity factor x (. 33/. 22) loss coefficient = 0. 99 overall pressure loss comparison. In other words the pressure loss through the larger but tighter elbow is about the same as through a smaller elbow at same exhaust flow.

The same idea applies to increase from 3" to 4", but the reduction of straight-pipe friction loss (in absolute pressure values) is much greater at this step down in size. Also, the bends in the 4" tube don't have to be that much tighter than in 3". But when trying to fit 5" tube into available space its a lot tougher fit resulting in some tight radius elbows.

I don't see anything wrong with using 5" tube for exhaust, but I don't think that the reduction of exhaust backpressure will be that significant in comparison to a 4" tube system. I also don't think that you would see any measurable performance increase (compared to 4").

If reducing the exhaust back-pressure is your goal, and you think the normal upgrade to a 4" tube system isn't going far enough, your best bet would to be to eliminate the over-the-axle routing and have the exhaust turn-out in front of the rear wheels. This eliminates a lot of pressure losses due to the elbows required to get around the axle.
Do the same in-front of wheel routing with a 5" tube, a big sweep elbow, and a straight pipe (no muffler) and backpressure will be about as low as you can go. But loud as hell.

That's my long-winded 2 cents worth.

Hello Bob. I'm over here in Longpew and wanting(more than needing)one of those 4" exhausts. Can you tell me more? Who is the shop? Who makes the exhaust kit? Price sounds pretty good for an installation. Walt

Bob- Do you have a phone # for these guys?? If you go back ask them if they will send me one in Alaska, I can handle the install.

TIA.

I did my 5 inch system for under three hundred. All you need to get is a down pipe and then go to the big truck places and get 1 90 degree, 2 45 degree, and some straight pipe and your done. It was pretty easy to do, I done it by myself. It took about 3 hours and sounds great.
