Truck has just over 36,000 miles and I just changed the fuel filter for the 3rd time. First 2 times the filter and housing looked brand new and I had a bit of a hard time starting after the second filter change and draining the housing and all that. So this time I just pulled the filter out and took my trouble light and shined it down into the housing through the remaining fuel, about 3/4 full, and again it looked brand new, absolutely perfect, old filter too other than being wet from diesel fuel it looked new. So I just popped a new filter on and screwed it down, bumped the starter twice and it fired right up. I fill up every time at the same place, our local truck stop and apparently their diesel is fresh and good quality. By the way the filter I use is a NAPA gold 3585 (says Wix on the box), $13. 99. Our dealer wants $80. for a fuel filter change. :D

i change my filter once a year, right before winter. that way i get all the water out and don't have to worry about the filter plugging up in the middle of winter.

Gee  I change my fuel filter every 10,000 miles. The owners book say's change every 15,000. I'm trying to avoid problems with my injectors:D . I also change my oil and filter about twice as often as recommeded. every 3,500:rolleyes: with standard oil and every 5-6,000 miles since changing to Amsoil at 50K. Am I bein' over protective:(

I recently did the same for a friend.

He mentioned it was time to change his oil etc... and I asked bout his fuel filter.

So I strolled down to Cummins picked him up oil/fuel filter... . wnet to Walmart for 3 gallons of Delo 400 ... and went over to his house.

I was pointing out things along the way... .

We changed the oil... . hooked up my pressure gauge for fuel... . ran to Sears to get him a 1 1/8 socket (for future use) came back. . changed the fuel filter. Redrove it and checked pressure. His lift pump is doing fine. After the filter change it was around 13 to 14psi idle.

Afterwards I had explained just how much the dealer would have charged him... not only to change it but the inital cost of the filter. So he was pretty happy... ..... and said wow that was pretty easy.
