i have on 04. 5 and i keep riping belts the dealer replaced the tensionor because it was bent and they said they have never seen one like that before and it stoped riping them for 7000 miles but did it again has anyone else had that problem

I've had that problem before, replaced the tensioner because it was bent. Now its bent again. Don't know what keeps bending them? Pretty expensive to ! Lee.

i have checked the pullys and tensioner and it doesnt look bent but the other day i was going at it with a ford lightning with minor mods and when i hit 3rd gear my tires just were blazing and i was on the rev limiter and i let of quick and got traction then pined it again and i think that could have caused the belt to jump off 2 cogs and tear but at least i beat the lightning by a couple truck lengths

In two years now, there has NEVER been a good explanation on this board, or on DTR, why some of us had shredded belts. My original one went at 5400 miles, dealer said "bad belt" or "installed wrong", replaced it with new one (which was ribbed AND crosshatched, where the OEM was ribbed only) and sent me on my way. That was almost two years and 16000 miles ago, and all (knock wood) has been well so far, however, I check it as least weekly, AND carry a spare belt. Something I have not had to do on any other stock car or truck I have owned on over 26 years of driving.

That has been the same story for MOST of the guys that have had the "early miles" shredding problem. Do a search on my name here, or over on DTR (Wexman + belt shred) and you will find links to many threads.

It is my understanding that there's some sort of bulletin that has dealers replacing the some tensioner or pulley with an override clutch, which will help to minimize the inherent diesel shutdown chirp, which may contribute to the shredding issue on the 04. 5 and up engines. I know all diesels chirp bad (my PSD was awful), but the new belt the dealer out on doesn't do it as much. It is my opinion that the strain of the chirp does put some additional stress on these belts.

In you case, you have a different problem. I would go to a dealer who will take the time to check pulley alignment, perhaps replace everything. If not, trade the truck - that is a major relability issues that won't go away.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

That happened to me while I was racing a Mustang. I saw the temp start rising at the stop light we came to and realized what had happened. It broke my fan, radiator, and clutch assembly. They replaced it all and the belt tensioner and the idler pulley. Never happened again but I also got rid of the truck after like 15000 miles.

Five Belts in 46,000, When a Diesel eats Belts it only time Before the cause shows its ugly Head,Generally its a nasty Repair. Document everything.

Check the main pulley (harmonic balancer rubber may be off spec, wobbly)

For the early 03's there is a TSB to replace cracked alternator bracke

Check alignment of all pulleys with straight edge.
