HI FLOW MUFF or STRAIGHT PIPE

I'm coming up on 30K and will soon be changing the transmission fluid in my 04 5 spd. manual transmission.

1. Which fluid should I use?

2. How much?

3. It is my understanding that to drain, I remove one of the PTO covers, is this correct?

4. Is it as simple as warming up, draining, and filling, or is there something else I need to know?

Thanks in advance,

Bryan

Most people will recommend the factory lube. I think it is cheapest from Standard Transmission and Gear, around $50 or so plus shipping. I myself have had the best luck with Redline, something like $8 per qt from Summit Racing. 4 qt. capacity on a standard NV4500.

The bottom pto bolt is the drain. Let it all come out. Then remove the cover and wipe out the bottom and the magnet and also inpsect for anything unusual while the cover is off.

Then put the cover back on using rtv as the gasket. Make sure to put some on the bolts, cause the bottom one for sure and maybe others go thru into the gear case.

Then, on a flat surface, refill to the bottom of the fill plug.

Are you sure you have an 04 5sd? The 04 manual to my knowledge is a 6sd.

They still had 5 speeds in 04, though not many.

All Dan says is correct. All I would add is that I usually take the floor apart and remove the top to refill because unless you have a pump it takes an act of congress to fill that thing through the side.

They won't let us have 6 spds here in Kalifornya, something about their being dangerous or something, so I wound up with a 5 speeder. Although that may have changed this year.

Scott,

How do you take the floor apart and fill from the top? Can't you just pump the new fluid in thru the filler hole via a flexible hose?

Also, what is the viscosity of the fluid that I need?

Thanks again all, I think I'll order some Redlilne.

Bryan

The manual calls for Mopar Synthetic 75W85 Manual Transmission Lubricant; Redline is fine. 8. 0 pints.

There is a fill plug on the side of the transmission next to a PTO cover. Buy a $10 pump at Pep Boys, it'll come in handy when you do the diffs too.

Yes, pump it in from the side. This will be faster/easier but I didn't have a pump so I go through the top. It's not bad to take apart, a couple screws under the cupholder bottom pieces and the boot around the 4x4 lever pops up on the shifter. It's on a frame that comes loose from the surrounding plastic but I don't remember how exactly

04 model year they still had the HO (305/555) and SO (235/460?). 6 speed was only available with the HO and the HO wasn't available in CA until they introduced the 600 (although now there isn't a HO designation because it is there isn't an SO).

Just like Roadwarrior said...

I just changed mine for the second time. I use Penzoil Synchromesh, which is meets all the applicable DC specifications for the NV5600 (it says so right on the bottle). Costs me a little over $50 for a case from the local Pennzoil dealer.

Bottom PTO bolt is the drain. Might take some hammering to get the PTO covers off, as they are RTV'd in place. Be sure to clean off the magnet either on the bottom of the case or attached right to the PTO cover.

Refill via the port on the back of the transmission. I don't need to pump it in, I'm able to squeeze the bottles of Pennzoil into the fill hole with little or no waste. Specification is 9. 5 pints (4. 75 quarts). The job really is a piece of cake (especially with the Fastcoolers!! )

:)

Oops, I'm a doofus. That fluid spec was for the NV5600... the actual capacity is 8 pints for the NV4500. SORRY!
