Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 5 Spd trans advice needed

Today 3rd gear started to make really loud clanking noise that sounded a lot like a rod knock and the shifter feels a little strange in 3rd only. I was in town and it was working fine at one light and the next light when I took off it scared me it was so loud. There is no noises or roughness in any other gear. It doesnt act like a broken tooth at all, more like the gear came loose and is hitting something as it rotates. 1st 2nd, 4th and 5th are all normal sounding.

Any Ideas?

I pulled the PTO cover off and there is 2 teeth missing on the cluster gear so now its time to decide which way to go. It got the full splined main shaft done 15 months ago along with all new bearings and seals so gear replacement is prolly the way to go.

Bummer, sounds like a call to Standard Transmission is in order.



I've got a bearing noise that makes itself known when boost gets over 20 lbs with a load on the truck. Guess I'll have to bite the bullet soon.
