After 190k miles of hard use, I think my 5spd (NV4500) just gave up.

Symptom: In all gears EXCEPT FOURTH I have a loud knok coming from the transmission, proportional to ENGINE SPEED. I can feel it stongly though the gearshift lever. The problem developed over about 2 minutes, when traveling at 70mph, in 5th gear with no load. The noise started quietly and gradually got louder until I took it out of 5th gear and put it in 4th. The gear shifting feels a bit loose now as well. The strange thing is that, in 4th gear, everthing appears to be normal, even under full power.

If anybody has an idea of the magnatude of the problem, please let me know. I need to decide if I need to purchase a rebuilt transmission or is it just something simple that can be fixed relatively easily.

Thanks in advance for the help.

That happened to my 99 last summer

It had all the symptoms you described. It was still under extended warranty (luckily enough). When dealer tech took it apart, he claimed it to be totaled;) . So now I have a brand new transmission to start my second 100,000 miles with:D

I wanted to try to put a 6 speed in it's place, but the difference was:--) $. So I stayed with the 5 sp. :(

It sounds like you lost a gear tooth on the front input shaft or on the front main drive gear on the cluster gear or a bearing on the cluster gear. 4th gear is direct both the front main shaft and the rear main shaft are hook together so your not running on any gears. So it`s going to be spendy.

I just replaced the cluster gear and 3rd gear and the parts were about $250 from Blumenthals. The trans shop did the R+R and put the new parts in for $400. Not cheap but way cheaper than a rebuilt trans.

Just placed an order with Standard Transmission for a re-built NV4500 which includes the fully splined 5th gear modification. I should have it in a few days. It's going to be a long weekend. Their price is very resonable. Less than half the price of what the local guys here in Denver charge to re-build the thing. Go to www.standardtransmission.com for the price. They also have that magical mystery oil that you are supposed to feed the NV4500 for a resonable price.

Anybody out there in the Denver area want to join me for a transmission party?

I asked them (std. transmission) about upgrading to a six speed. Surprisingly, they said it is not worth it beacuse "the NV5600 has its own set of problems and is much more expensive to rebuild. " He said "It might be worth upgrading if the 5600 was bulletproof, but it is far from it".
