I was hauling some feritlizer today on the 5th wheel trailer and on my first load on the highway after getting up to speed and running in 5th for about a mile I heard a snap come from the transmission and the transmission seemed to jolt. The snap sound occured about another 100 yards again so I shifted down to 4th for the rest of the 10 mile trip with no problems. On my way back to get another load whenever I seemed to get up around 55 I would maybe get that snap again. This happened about twice on my way back to get another load. Every load I hauled I stayed in 4th when loaded and never had any problems. But every time I was empty I went to 5th and the thing would snap every once in a while. Any Ideas on whats going on. I don't think it has anything to do with the clutch since It pulled good in all other gears up steep grades. The transmission only has about 4000 miles on it and I'm not sure if it has the 5th gear nut update or not so I'll be calling tommorw to see if the place I bought it from had made the fix.

5speed snap!!!

I see that you have a 4x4 is that a chain drive????transfer case If so suspect that it is the chain jumping a tooth or two maybe they are wearing????? Hope that it is astep forward?

snapping noise in transmission

The chain in the transfer case only turns when in 4 WD. I would check the fifth gear retaining nut. A new version nut is available from Dodge for about $45. 00. I replaced mine and it really isn't a tough job It can be done without removing the transmission. You'll need a torque wrench capable or 280 fp. and a special wrench to get the nut off. If you deside to do it yourself give me a shout and I'll send the wrench to you, (jimnjo@dawghaus.net)

found problem

I took the t-case out and everything seemed to be fine except for all the metal shavings:rolleyes: So I ended up taking off work and taking the t-case over to Doug at EE. He took one look at it and rembered me getting the input shaft carrier from him to convert this truck to a manual and said I needed to change the input carrirer bearing. I guess it needs a thicker one to keep everything lined up just right, I just whish I would have known this the first time I had it apart. Odley that was 5,000 miles ago and no problems with it till now. Also the shavings were coming from the input carrier hitting the case but everything is ok.

Yeah Matt,

I converted mine to manual shift too and I had to replace the input spline and the bearing too. To bad that you had to go back into it but better now than out in the middle of Texas. Did you renew that fifth gear retainer nut?
