Hi all,

I brought my 99 Turbo Diesel 2500, extended cab / bed into Dodge yesterday with some brake pull problems, wandering steering and transmission difficulties. Here is what happened, hopeully someone can tell me if I am getting jerked around.

After a days work and a lot of BS from the dealership, including 25 different reasons they could not put my heavy /long truck on the lift, they have come up with a solution to each of my problems, listed below.

Problem 1: Gear hunt. The tachometer would show RPMs shooting up and down at different speeds, usually above 40mph, almost like the truck was not finding a gear it could stay in. It's RPMs were off by about 200 at 70mph (seemed to be averaging about 2200-2300 RPMS at 70mph, sometimes going to it's normal mark of about 2000RPM, but not staying there.

Solution: The team leader at Chrysler said it had something to do with the "manual lever" (what is that? I asked for a detailed explanation from the mechanic to be written down hopefully I will find out tomorrow) causing it to miss it's mark when I got on the throttle. That seems suspect.

Problem 2: Brake pull. I had a feeling this one would be a costly problem. My truck would pull to the right when I got on the brake. It wasn't bad and could be controlled, but I dont want to have my truck suffering when it doesn't need to.

Solution: It appears the brake pads, particularly on the right hand side were pretty far gone. (theres only 43. 5k on the truck). They said the rotors were warped and they had to send them off to another shop to resurface them at about $35 per rotor, because their equipment was not working perfectly. They quoted me $500 to resurface the roters and replace the brake pads. This seems a little high dont you think? The majority of this work is being quoted as labor because they said they have to take off the entire wheel assembly to access the pads and rotor.

They also quoted me for new shocks at about $100 a pop w/ another $200 for labor.

Problem 3: Steering wander / leaky rear diff seal.

Solution: They suggested I go get new tires and get it alligned, this should cure what ails you. They said keep an eye on the diff seal, as long as it isn't dripping, it isn't a problem.

Total bill for service, about $1000.

Any ideas, I dont particularly trust this dealer and would like a little feedback if possible on there quotes / solutions.

Thanks!

Adam,

Those guys would have to win a mean fight before I would let them near my truck!

Obviously, they are not equiped to work on your truck if they can't even get it on the lift.

Brake pull is an old problem. Search these forums for more than you really want to know about it. It sounds to me like you have at least one sticking caliper. The pins and sliding surfaces MUST be lubed, especially the pins, or this will happen. The rear brakes may also contribute to the problem if they are out of adjustment which they probably are. The so-call automatic rear brake adjusters usually don't work. Make sure that the rotors are actually running out. The tolerance is . 005" so they need to show you that on a dial indicator. My '95 has 170K+ miles on the original rotors and the runout is . 002". If the rotors are bad you probably can feel a vibration in the brake pedal. Taking the entire wheel assembly off required removing eight lug nuts the last time I did it.

They don't have clue about what may be wrong with the transmission. Do you feel it shift when it's "hunting"? Are you using the cruise control? If so, it may be the problem. If not, then you might have a transmission problem. May be a TPS problem causing the TCC to lock and unlock. You need to get it checked out by someone who knows about these transmissions. I don't see how the shift lever could cause this kind of problem.

If you can't do the work yourself you need to find someone who knows what he is doing. These guys don't.

RUN, don't walk....

I wouldn't EVER go back to that dealer!

They can't get your truck up on a lift??? c'mon!

Try a reputable independant brake shop, and transmission

shop, and alignment shop for those problems.

The differental leak is common, Dodge will just replace the seal which will leak again almost overnight. Dodge isn't bright enough to figure out that the shaft part that goes inside the seal has a groove cut into it and needs replacing too.

Dodge is out to make their living off the repairs they do to their poorly engineered vechicles.

I wouldn't support 'em... ...

Get your truck out of there and don't let them ever touch it again!!!!! I have had dealing with these fraud-laiden, moronic, rip-off artists. These are the guys who tried to sell a truck that had been hit by a plow truck... and they didn't notiofy the potential buyer. As for shocks, RS 9000'sa re about 70 a whack. As for labor, I live in Everett, about 30 minutes from you. Easy enough to do. The service rep flat out lied to me and the other reps regarding my transmission problems. They refused to hook a guage to it, even though MoparMuscle had pimpointed the problem to a gov pressure solenoid. I could go on for hours about these idiots!!!!. I hope someone form this dealer reads this page because I want everyone to know that HERB CHAMBERS DODGE of DANVERS, MA is a 5-star bunch of... .....

5 Star????

I just picked up my new 2001 3/4 4x4 Sport Saturday. The sales rep has been great, he has helped me in everyway possible. . (I know that's his job. . but. . ) He found just what I wanted at about the price I was looking for... But after I left his desk, I was down to the finance person at this dealership, where he is about to make me stick this truck " where the sun don't shinny" First he tried to stick me with the Extra super Dumper, U got to have this extra warrenty,... Wanted me to sign the conntract right then... (I Don't think so!!) I asked about the intrest Rate... and I had to pick up my jaw off his desk when he told me the Astronomical number he wanted me to pay. After a few rounds with that, he reprinted out the contract. . and I was just to sign at the bottom... So I thought I better start reading all the charges and BS... So what's this "Dealer Care" charge here??

"Oh... I forgot to taked that off... " Sure U did. . So after a few rounds we settled the paper work and I drove the new ride home. . After I got home we scoped out the truck and found a few scratchs and a little dent and a stain in the head liner. (Looked like someones dirt hand. . ) So I called up the salesman and he said bring it in. .

So I stopped in the next day and the saleman took the truck to the shop to have them take a look and schedule a time to get it fixed. He said I need to see the finance person again because something was wrong with my paper work. So off to see the person not too high on my list... He informs be that we need to change my contract... (me hoping that he found a better intrest rate. . was like, Lets see. . ) So he pulls out this sheet about rebates and junk. . Tells me that they gave me the Farm Bureau Discount, and I am not a Farm Bureau so they can not give me that money. I told him that was not my problem. . This is the price that I agreed to... .

Well we can not sell U the truck at that price...

To bad, your dealership told me a price and I agreed...

But U don't have a Bureau membership...

Oh well. . I tell him. .

He says. . someone is going to have to pay that money...

I pointed to the paper work... I think U can find your money in there somewhere...

He asked... Is this going to stop you from purchasing the truck. .

About 15 mins of going back and forth, I told him. . I signed my contract. . it was too late. . :p

He says. . I guess I can't take your signed paper work from you. . I guess U win some and lose some... .

So I started in on him about how long Until I could refinance my loan... He was like why would U want to do that...

Because most banks can beat your rate... (they probably could not, but he had me steamed. . ) and then I decided to drop it from there... Especially since they had brought my truck back around...

But I sure see how some people get screwed at some of these Dealerships. . if you watching your butt, they are going to take every dime U got...

The saleman is personally going to pick up my truck and take it back to the dealer tomorrow to get the scratches fixed. . (Its about a hr drive to the dealer. )

Today. . I thinking all is good with the truck deal. . and all is final. . I checked my credit card statement online. . and there was a $200 charge from the Dealer on my card... . Before they picked up my truck (from another dealer) they told me they need a $200 deposit to go get the truck. . in case I didn't buy it. . So I gave them my CC number... and now I'll have to fight to get that taken care of... . Is it ever going to End... This is my First new truck... I sure like the truck. . but some people at the Dealer are driving me nuts... Now I know where Road Rage really starts... . EErrrr... At the Dealership!!!!!

Thanks,

Bryan

As mad as I am at the Dealer... the truck sure is Awesome... Everyone on here helped me choose the the truck I got... and I thank Everyone. . I will be adding some pics to the Members Rigs soon... I got to update the Sig...

I hope they treat my Baby OK at the Dealer tomorrow, without my supervision... . :(

Guys, sure am sorry to hear of your problems with these dealerships. Not that this will help at this time, but I've made a point to purchase vehicles from small town dealerships who depend on long term satisfied customers if they're going to stay in business. My dealings have in general been satisfactory (still takes a crowbar to pry a nickle out of their hands :D), and recommend checking with the Better Business Bureau (http://www.bbb.com) as well with a new business, especially when a lot of money is involved. Best of luck.

Kurt,

Ya got that right. Small town dealers are a lot better. I've been pretty happy with the dealer in Eureka. In fact, last year we bought a Chrysler LHS from them to go with the Green Monster.

Run is a good word thats for sure. $100 per shock for a DC junk shock + install???? I would have ran just right there.

Look out for yousrself

Wow... a $200 dollar charge!!! When dealerships do trades between them, the price is agreed beforehand amongst themselves. Your dealership just wanted to give you the shaft, on more than one occassion.

The small town dealerships are nice, just do not expect them to be up on the latest stuff though. The big guys do see more volume, but they can get plenty of practice to run the customer's wallet through the ringer. I used to be a service manager at a small dealership, and I can vouch for that.

Did you try to call the Star Hotline and talk to Chrysler? Some times they will foot half the bill if it was obvious that there was a problem during the warranty period. Also, the small town guys may be able to sneak in a truck under warranty when it is not technically covered. The big guys won't take very many risks on getting caught, but they will be super nice if it is under warranty.

Beware, dealerships are shark-infested waters, and we are all bait. Keep aware and do not be afraid to shop around to get a good price and a second or third opinion.

A Must Read Prior To Any Vehicle Purchase

I have a book named Don't Get Taken Every Time by Remar Sutton ISBN 0-14-026670-4.

Every person should read this at least once, before ever getting near a car dealer. There probably are some decent ones out there, but selling cars is their game, not ours, and it is not often we win. A very informative and enjoyable read, at least if you haven't recently been taken.

5 star Pain..

The saleman was right on time to pick up my truck this morning to get the scratches fixed, and to change out a few other things on the truck. He even left his personal Truck (2000 4x4 sport with a few mods on it. ) for me to drive.

I thought that the $200 was a deposit, Which would mean I would get it back... I think this was to make sure I bought a truck from them. Anyways, now they are trying to tell me that they took the $200 off the price of the truck... I told them. . that wasn't in my contract... So I'm still working on this one. Just seems like everytime I turn around they are taking another dime from me and I'm having to fight to keep my pennies...

Work2Much... I bought this truck just down the road from you. . in Ennis... I would have gone to a small town dealer too... a friend higher up in the dealership chain set me up with the salesman. . (Which has done a great job. ) Believe me. . He will hear about it... (U know he would be out of town this week. . )

Thanks for everyones Help. . and letting me Vent. . I'm not a pain in the butt normally, but this is getting old. . never had such a time buy a truck. .

Ah good ol Lil Ennis, TX. Would be nice if I still lived there considering the Texas MotorPlex is there. I remember when they first built that I could hear them running from my house... I lived there from 1976 to 1989. Kinda miss it in a way... ... . actually just miss going to grandmas house for Sunday dinner... ... man that was some good food. I should try to get back for a visit since my grandparents are getting up there in age.

yea Kat. . the Motorplex is nice... even better now that we have the speedway outside of Forth Worth, too (It just seems to take them a long time to find the finish line. . around and round they go. . hahaa. . )

Actually I was was just up Catting around close to you. . Dad manages a farm in western Iowa. . Owns it, but lives in TX, we were just checking out some land improvements. I guess I should have been looking around more while I was up there. . I didn't really have a problem with the price, but it seems to keep going up and up...

Let us know if you head this way, there are more than a few members around... Catch ya later...

Well. . my good saleman has come through for me... He has been the best part of this whole deal. . He stopped in tonight to tell me that they had credited the $200 back to my account. We BSed for while. . and I introduced him to the TDR web site. . Only down fall is he took his personal truck back. . I took it for a spin. . woohoo... I really got the bug now... He has some kind of Boost mod box on it. . He's like yea. . this is the Doggiest one I have ever had... he's going to bring by his other BOMB cummins for me to drive, says it really goes. . I hope all is good. . I'm sure going to miss my new truck tonight as they are fixing a few scratches in the truck. . Thanks guys. .

I cant help you with problems 1 and 3 but had similar problem with brakes. I took mine to two different dealers who relined the brakes and told me that would solve the pulling. both times the brakes would pull again in about 1000 mi. dealer number 3 did a TSB that was in the (body dynamics) section of ther computer system. I got new rotors, hubs, calipers, bearings, linings, and a tracking arm. all covered under my warranty. that was 7000 mi ago and it brakes strait as an arrow! talk to your dealer about this if he wont do it, FIND ONE WHO WILL! their are a few competent dealers out there.
