My sister has a 98. 5 manual 235hp. The check engine light has been coming on and resetting itself for 6+ months. When it is on there are no symptoms. Still has power. She said she did notice a slight stumble when accelerating in 3rd a couple days ago. She took it to the local 5 star who stated that it showed a "timing code". They quoted $2500 for vp-44, filter, and new lift pump. (they say although LP pressure is good, it is leaking. )

Here is what we know.

-LP has been good since her ownership(2 yrs) I installed gauges when she got it.

- Filter has been changed regular, (PSI gauge is post filter)

-light will always activate when we tow

-cummins e-brake, but I keep IAT clean, and light will still come on w/freshly cleaned IAT

By searching here, my thought is to change the $25. 00 crank sensor, and see how things go.

Any thoughts please

Can you pull the codes? I think that some auto parts stores will pull the codes if available, it might have to be done while the CE light is on. Otherwise you might want to get a 2nd opinion from another dealer. If it is a VP, you can source it from $1,000 to $1,500 and install it yourself (with a decent tool set) under a "shade tree". VP failure is commonly associated with a failed lift pump, but not always and it seems that many go shortly after a lift pump replacement.

my truck has a timing code. p0216 to be exact and it looks like its time for a vp44 for me. i have an occasional loss of power, mostly when cold. another member had this problem after ip replacement. took it back and install another pump and it is fine now. sucks! mark

Funny

Not saying they are wrong, but I'll bet if your VP and LP were under warranty they would have told you everything was fine and sent you on your way

Update

I read the printout from the service department today.

It reads:

cel on diagnostic indicated

5311 cc

fuel injection timing failure

I can't find a 5311 code anywhere????

Maybe they are unfortunatly right :(
