I'm one of those who didn't get wheel well liners (or air dam or hood liner for that matter) on my '02. I let it go until now, but I've just installed an Airdog unit in front of the rear wheel, outside the frame. Without a liner, this area is highly subject to splash, etc.
So I bought a $5, black plastic, rectangularish trash can to serve as molded plastic stock for a homemade liner. I started with a cardboard template, then trimmed to fit. This doesn't cover the frame, but it covers the forward area of the wheel well and makes a 90* turn for a few inches for a little added protection. I had a few plastic "christmas tree" fasteners on hand and drilled a couple of holes though the interior of the fender for mounting.
It looks decent, not too cheesy, and will provide a little protection for those expensive components. I love the "Cheap Tricks" section of some of my favorite magazines, so this is my contribution.
Happy creative fabricating.
